Andy McKee

Andy McKee offers a distinctive voice on the steel-string acoustic guitar, composing original works that have reached audiences around the world. As a teenager he gravitated toward modern fingerstyle innovators such as Michael Hedges, Preston Reed, and Don Ross, then set aside the electric guitar to explore the acoustic’s full potential. Through alternate tunings, tapping, partial capos, and percussive effects, he draws the scope of an ensemble from a single instrument. His piece Drifting became one of YouTube’s early viral standouts in 2006, with Rylynn, For My Father, and Into the Ocean following and helping his videos amass hundreds of millions of views while inspiring a new generation of fingerstyle players. He has recorded or toured with John Petrucci, Prince, Eric Johnson, Steve Lukather, and David Foster. Beyond the stage he founded the Musicarium in 2015, a fingerstyle guitar camp that has welcomed guest instructors including Tommy Emmanuel, Eric Johnson, Stanley Jordan, and Don Ross. Recent work includes tripliciti with Trevor Gordon Hall and Calum Graham, an acoustic trio that earned acclaim, with a new solo guitar album and a 20th anniversary re-recording of Art of Motion planned for 2025.

The Wayfarers

Inspired by the earliest Christian communities, this gathering emphasizes that faith grows best in company rather than in isolation. Friends-in-the-making walk together, share meals, pray, and practice hospitality so that ordinary connections can become lifelong relationships. The Wayfarers is a community for those who want to reclaim that shared way of life. Meeting monthly, the group steps away from the noise to walk a trail in North County, spend unhurried time outdoors in God’s creation, hear a brief reflection from Scripture, and enjoy conversations that often continue over breakfast. People with deep experience in following Jesus as well as those who are simply curious about faith take part. The focus is not on difficult climbs, but on slowing down to notice God, appreciate the natural world, and build friendships that enrich the journey of faith.

They share how a catastrophic illness turned into an improbable recovery, reflecting the dedication of a spouse, the power of faith, and the support of a community. Drew spent 70 days on a ventilator and faced a collapsed lung, multiple infections, paralysis, and a near-fatal episode. Throughout, Maria stood as his advocate, refusing to end life support and drawing strength from loved ones and collective prayer. The presentation highlights resilience, love, and hope. Admission is free for California Surf Museum members and $5 for the general public. Books will be available for purchase after the presentation. To purchase tickets or RSVP, call 760-721-6876.

From Page to Space: Drawing & Design for Storytelling

This eight week workshop explores drawing as a tool for seeing, imagining, and telling stories, guided by an instructor with experience as both a visual artist and theater educator. Their background includes exhibiting at the Día de los Muertos Festival and teaching set design at CCAE, informing a creative approach that connects visual art with the world of the stage. Students begin with foundational skills such as line, value, composition, and careful observation, then move into design concepts. Through hands on exercises and conversation, the class looks at how artists and set designers shape mood, character, and space. The series concludes with a personal project in which each participant creates either a small set or design concept or a short series of drawings inspired by a personal story or theme. Sessions meet on Wednesdays for eight weeks in the CH Art Studio at CCAE. Enrollment is limited to 20 students, and tuition is $225 for the full workshop.

Calafia Rapier Tournament

Calafia’s Uncollared rapier gathering at Buddy Todd Park celebrates the joy of testing skill, sharing creativity, and supporting one another. The day features two lists. The rapier tournament uses single elimination, with an opportunity to earn a second life by showing a recent arts or sciences project. Finals are fought as a best-of-11 without repeating weapon forms, a format often called an Uberelf, and a prize recognizes the most versatile fighter. The Cut & Thrust bracket follows the same single-elimination structure and offers the same arts-based second life. Its finals are best-of-11 to first blood, with weapon styles set by agreement among the Masters of Defense present. Entrants may compete in both lists, but any extra life gained through the arts can be used for only one and must be chosen at entry. Masters of Defense do not enter the lists and instead support the field as marshals and mentors. An arts and sciences competition is open to all, with entries displayed throughout the day. If a piece will be carried onto the field, provide a photo and brief description for the display. Fighters who enter the competition receive a token that can be redeemed at the list table for a second life. Judging will be provided by the Ladies of the Rose. Registration is $20 for adults, with a $10 discounted rate for adult members. Those under 18 attend as guests of the Barony. Cash and checks are accepted at the gate, and checks may be made payable to SCA Inc./Canton of Summergate. This is a dry site, and dogs must remain leashed. 25 Hour Yin Yoga Foundations Training with Joe Barnett

Explore the foundations of Yin Yoga in a 25 hour training that introduces the art of guiding a practice of surrender. Attend live online with small breakout groups or take part in person in Encinitas, CA. The curriculum covers five core Yin archetypes, where they work in the body, and ways to adapt them for different practitioners. Expect interactive study of anatomy, including locating key skeletal landmarks and exploring range of motion. Participants learn to recognize types of sensation such as tension and compression, distinguish muscle and fascia responses, and sense physical and subtle energy. The course also presents the functional approach and the Yin Yoga Sutras of Paul Grilley, along with foundational sequences, how they function, variations, and principles for creating new ones. Yin Yoga invites stillness in postures held for several minutes so the deeper connective tissues can be safely stressed and nourished while the nervous system settles. Because every body and mind expresses unique patterns, the training emphasizes meeting individual differences with clear dialogue, using the system of archetypes and variations developed by Paul Grilley and senior teachers to support student self inquiry. All Yin Foundations programs include brief analysis of each of the five archetypes. This offering dedicates additional time to the Twisted Tree module, focusing on the spine and discs, the sacrum, the outer hip, and the shoulder girdle, with attention to both anatomy and function. Early registration is $450, with a standard rate of $550 thereafter.
