COVID: A Love Story - Big Wednesday

At the California Surf Museum’s Big Wednesday, author Maria Brophy appears with her husband, surfer and artist Drew Brophy, to share COVID: A Love Story, a true account of crisis, advocacy, and recovery. They recount how a severe case of COVID placed Drew in an induced coma with long odds, leading to 70 days on a ventilator and complications that included a collapsed lung, multiple infections, total paralysis, and a brush with death. Faced with warnings that survival was unlikely and pressure to remove life support, Maria persisted as his strongest advocate, turning to faith, prayer, and the support of family, friends, and community. He survived despite the odds, and their story underscores resilience, hope, and the strength of love. Admission is free for California Surf Museum members and $5 for general admission. Books will be on sale after the talk. For tickets or to RSVP, call 760-721-6876.

Calafia Rapier Tournament

At Buddy Todd Park, the Uncollared edition of the Calafia Rapier Tournament focuses on joy found in skilled fencing, creative work, and encouragement from the community. Two lists will run, Rapier and Cut & Thrust, each using single elimination with the chance to earn a second life by presenting a recent arts or sciences project. Rapier finals are a best of eleven with no repeated weapons forms, often called an Uberelf, so competitors are encouraged to bring a full range of secondaries, with extras available as needed. A prize will recognize the most well rounded fighter of the day. Cut & Thrust follows the same bracket and second life option, with best of eleven finals fought to first blood and weapons forms negotiated between the Masters of Defense on site. Competitors may enter both lists, but an extra life earned through the arts applies to only one and must be chosen when entering. Masters of Defense will not compete in the lists, and their roles as marshals, mentors, and witnesses are welcome on the field. The arts and sciences competition is open to all who wish to enter, with displays available throughout the day. If an item will be taken into combat, participants are asked to provide a photo and brief description for the display. Fighters who enter the arts competition receive a token redeemable at the list table for a second life, and the Ladies of the Rose will serve as judges. Registration is $20 for adults, with a $10 discount for adult members. Children under 18 are guests of the Barony. Payment at the gate may be made by cash or check, and checks should be made payable to SCA Inc./Canton of Summergate. This is a dry site, and dogs must be kept leashed. Event steward: THL Timothy McBride of Aran. For questions, contact event.rapier@calafia.sca-caid.org. The spirit of the day reaches beyond results. It lives in the friend who cheers a comeback, the art that brings a fighter back to the line, the shared laugh after a double, and the courage to try something new. Happiness happens on the list field, at the arts and sciences table, and in the moments between.

Flow Tide Sessions

This monthly sound bath invites participants to meet what is present and cultivate the flexibility to navigate both the peaks and the dips of daily life. You will recline in zero gravity chairs as layered tones and vibrations surround the body, creating an oceanlike sense of buoyancy that reminds the nervous system it can move with the swell rather than fight it. The soundscape is fully immersive, blending crystal singing bowls, binaural tones, and gentle breath guidance that work with your natural rhythms instead of aiming for nonstop calm. The experience unfolds at an intentional pace so there is time to feel and process. The reclined position eases pressure on the spine and signals safety, the acoustics create the sensation that sound is arriving from every direction, and somatic prompts invite you to notice both comfort and discomfort without needing to fix anything. It is designed for people who are tired of staying constantly on, for athletes, lifters, and surfers who recognize that recovery includes the nervous system, and for anyone managing real stress who wants something more grounded than relentless good vibes. No previous experience is required, only a willingness to feel what is true. Comfortable clothing for lying down is recommended, and you are welcome to bring a favorite blanket and water. Bolsters, eye masks, and zero gravity chairs are provided. Doors open 15 minutes before the start and late arrivals can disrupt the immersion, so plan accordingly. Capacity is limited to four participants to maintain a spacious, contained environment. This offering is not a substitute for medical care, and those with a pacemaker, sound sensitivity, or in the first trimester of pregnancy should consult a provider in advance. Cancellations made at least 48 hours before the session receive a full refund, and reservations are nonrefundable after that window.
