    Cactus to Clouds

Cactus to Clouds Trail, Palm Springs · verified Aug 28
    See details

Geared to well experienced hikers, this demanding trek covers about 22 miles, starting at sea level and climbing to Mount Jacinto. Water is available roughly 10 miles in, followed by another 6 miles to the summit, where a longer rest is planned. The route then descends 6 miles to the tram, takes the tram down, and finishes with a drive back to the trailhead from a drop-off point that is still about 6 miles away. Training and preparation are emphasized, with a focus on building cardio and even using a sauna. Plans may change on the day if extreme heat is a concern. Pack ample water for the first stretch, around 3 to 5 liters, along with electrolytes such as powders, chews, or tablets. Bring enough food for roughly one and a half to two meals, noting that food is available at the tram station during the descent. Some hikers consider L-citrulline or L-arginine, as well as peanuts, for support at higher elevations. Helpful gear includes trekking poles if preferred, shoes with strong grip, and a headlamp for the early morning. Conditions near the peak can be cold and windy, so layers like a windbreaker and a beanie are recommended.
