    Free

The class takes place in the Petaluma Meeting Room at the Petaluma Regional Library and offers an introduction to Empowerment Self Defense 101, presenting IMPACT Bay Area’s approach to personal safety. It looks at self-defense as a continuum, starting with the first signals that something may be unsafe, moving through practical physical responses when needed, and including strategies for caring for yourself afterward. Participants build skills in tuning into intuition, assessing situations, and using confident body language. You will practice a clear self-defense voice to alert yourself, a potential aggressor, and bystanders, and you will work on setting and holding boundaries through inner awareness, posture, and words. J. Roddy Walston

Little Saint, 25 North St, Healdsburg · verified Sep 27
    Free

In the upstairs space at the Second Story, no-cover live music sets the tone, with seating granted in order of arrival and admission limited by capacity. No reservation is required. J. Roddy Walston brings ferocious energy, from the rallying blast of Heavy Bells to the cosmic pull of Boys Can Never Tell. The show favors motion, feeling, and surrender, running on a psychedelic intensity that grips the body and shakes something long buried loose. The sound braids Cobain-level fury, Nilsson’s skewed sweetness, Zeppelin power, and a sly nod to William Onyeabor’s solitary calculator funk. Attempts to pigeonhole him rarely stick, since he leans into chaos, the performances land heavy, and the songs pick up the tab. He appears with his band, carrying a burn-it-down reputation.

S.R. Laws crafts songs with the warmth of classic favorites while bringing his own fresh viewpoint. Influenced by storytellers such as John Hiatt, Lou Reed, Steve Earle, Neil Finn, and Ron Sexsmith, he focuses on vivid narratives and memorable melodies. His connection to music took root in Northern California, where he dug through his father’s finds of discarded 45s and discovered a world of sound one record at a time. A leap to Texas with two suitcases and a small budget led him into Austin’s lively scene, where open mics and songwriter nights helped refine his voice and stagecraft. Now based in Sonoma County, he tours and writes for his original rock band, The Heartsleeves, sharing songs person to person. Audiences and hosts frequently highlight his clear baritone, first person storytelling, and easygoing Americana pulse that builds slowly and lingers after the last note.

The heart of the experience is intuitive painting, paired with playful explorations of movement, breath, and sound. Locals can participate by day and sleep at home. A sliding scale is available on request. The retreat is led by Claudia Erzinger, Alyssa Cox, and Maria Freebairn-Smith. Claudia, Executive Director at the Center for Creative Exploration, has taught intuitive painting since 2006 and brings experience in hospice nursing as well as long-standing practices in meditation, Buddhism, yoga, and Soulwork. Maria brings more than three decades of process painting and teaching, helped found the Center for Creative Exploration, and draws on studies in psychology, restorative justice, Waldorf early childhood education, breath work, and improvisational movement. Mediterranean Movement

DanzHaus / The Gingerbread House, 1275 Connecticut St, San Francisco · verified Sep 27
    See details

Move to the rhythms of the Mediterranean with Monica in a live, monthly class at DanzHaus / The Gingerbread House. Held on second Saturdays, this welcoming session blends dance and music study with cultural context, inviting participants to deepen their folk and artistic practice in a supportive studio setting. Monica draws on over three decades of experience in Egyptian, Arab, and southern Italian movement and musical traditions. Expect abundant music from those regions, opportunities to create rhythms or songs for one another, and occasional collaborations with visiting musicians. Each gathering is unique, yet connected by ongoing themes that evolve from month to month. Classes are guided by music and are highly interactive. Participants warm up, explore full-body movement through directed exercises, try improvisational prompts and short combinations, learn in cultural context, dance together in a circle, and finish with a cool down. Choreography is minimal so there is room to cultivate personal style, instincts, and confidence. Dancers from many backgrounds can enrich their practice, and everyone leaves feeling more connected to their body. This experience suits people who want to work with intention and cultural grounding, who are drawn to the dance and music of Egypt and southern Italy, who want structure for technique, and who wish to get comfortable improvising, clapping or drumming for others, or singing as part of the exchange. It is not a straight belly dance or tarantella class, though elements of both appear within a broader, clearly defined framework. The approach prioritizes honoring distinctions among related traditions and the migrations that carry them, keeping practices vibrant without blending them into a single form or placing ourselves at the center. Plan to arrive a little early to settle in, meet classmates, and sign in. The studio is up one flight of stairs and has no elevator. There is ample street parking, and the location is near the 19 and 48 MUNI lines with connections to BART. Sliding scale pricing is available at $15, $20, or $25 per class. Paying in advance is appreciated, and early arrival door payment is accepted with exact cash or Venmo. Please note that refunds and make-up classes are not offered.

This club highlights books that explore and celebrate queer identity, and this session focuses on Bury Your Gays by Chuck Tingle. Attendance is free, and RSVPs help the hosts plan. Bury Your Gays follows Misha as he pursues success in Hollywood at a moment when his career is rising. After an Oscar nomination, the studio behind his long running streaming series urges him to remove queer characters for the algorithm. He refuses, which puts a target on his back, and soon figures from his horror movie past begin stalking him and his friends in the hills above Los Angeles. Haunted by what came before, he must risk everything to keep the nightmares from burying him for good. The novel is a USA Today bestseller and has been widely recognized, including the Locus Award for Best Horror Novel, a Lambda Literary Award finalist nod, and placements on best of and best horror lists from outlets such as Esquire, Parade, Library Journal, Paste, HuffPost, and Publishers Weekly. It has also been highlighted by Indie Next and LibraryReads, with additional honors from Libby, RUSA, and the Dragon Awards. About the author: Chuck Tingle is the USA Today bestselling writer of Camp Damascus, Bury Your Gays, and Straight. His work has been finalists for the Bram Stoker Awards and the CALIBA Golden Poppy Award. Born in Home of Truth, Utah and now based in Los Angeles, he writes horror, romance, and fantasy while maintaining a playful anonymity, and he champions the belief that love is real.

    Free

A free book club discussion centers on The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, a national bestseller and Bram Stoker Award finalist that follows three women in different eras as witchcraft and danger converge. The narrative traces Minerva, a graduate student delving into the life of author Beatrice Tremblay, whose Depression-era fixation on a mysterious roommate and the novel The Vanishing points to a disappearance with real roots. As Minerva’s research deepens, a menacing presence seems to haunt the same campus, echoing stories from her great-grandmother’s youth in 1900s Mexico and extending its reach into Minerva’s own life in 1990s Massachusetts. The book has appeared on year-end best-of lists from NPR, Elle, Kirkus Reviews, Book Riot, Library Journal, Crime Reads, and She Reads, and has earned praise from Tananarive Due. This selection is part of Napa Bookmine’s reading BINGO, with each pick tied to a square on the card. Admission is free, and RSVPs are appreciated for planning. See details

Featuring Paul Spring, Meernaa, and Steven van Betten. Paul Spring is a New York City songwriter and guitarist who has issued seven albums in five years, moving from classical and electronic projects to a guitar-centered folk sound. His 2021 release of J.S. Bach 12 String Transcriptions led to a two-year weekly residency at Manhattan’s Burp Castle, and in 2024 Aquarium Drunkard described River Flows Two Ways as both distinctive and a welcoming entry point to his catalog. Performing as Meernaa, Los Angeles musician Carly Bond weaves R&B, jazz, psychedelic rock, folk, art rock, and pop into a fluid, genre-blending style that explores growth, introspection, and emotional change. The debut album Heart Hunger arrived in June 2019, shaped by personal experiences and family history. Songwriter Steven van Betten lives in Los Angeles and writes with a storyteller’s focus, shifting from vistas of the American West to the intimacy of human relationships while revealing the wonder in everyday moments. Raised in Blue Diamond, Nevada, a small desert community, his music reflects time spent playing guitar in rocky canyons, pausing to climb sandstone and search for swimming holes under the heat of the sun.
