    Robert Lester Folsom

Space Ballroom, 325 Treadwell St, Hamden
    See details

Robert Lester Folsom appears at Space Ballroom for an all ages performance presented by Premier Concerts and Manic Presents. A southern singer, songwriter, and psychedelic serviceman, Folsom’s rediscovered recordings have broadened his place in American folk rock. Anthology Recordings’ Sunshine Only Sometimes: Archives Vol. 2, 1972–1975 draws from sessions tracked around Georgia with a reel to reel in bedrooms, a barn, and a motel room, capturing a revolving cast of sharp studio collaborators. These early works mingle mellow folk, rural colors, and psych tinges with strong hooks and introspective writing, while his 1976 album Music and Dreams explored smooth West Coast AOR and the Laurel Canyon strain of soft rock Americana. His path included inventive home overdubbing on a Sears two track, close work with guitarist Hans VanBrackle, and the formation of the progressive southern rock outfit Abacus. The result is a body of songs that pairs light and shadow with a timeless feel, inviting continued discovery across generations.

THE ROCKY HANCOCK MEMORIAL HIKE & FALL FOLIAGE

    Sleeping Giant State Park, Hamden
    See details

This month’s hike carries special meaning as participants honor the life of Rocky Hancock at Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden, celebrating the friendship, laughter, and community he shared. Hosted by Kevin Merriman, the outing gathers friends and supporters to remember Rocky on trails known for colorful foliage, wooded paths, rocky ridges, and wide views. Meet at the main entrance parking area, to the right of the wooden building with bathrooms. Arriving a little early is encouraged since the park is especially popular during peak leaf season. Kevin will lead a social group pace with time to enjoy the scenery and connect with others. Expect typical New England terrain with rocks, roots, hills, and uneven ground, so sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes are recommended. Dogs on leash are welcome on the trails. This route was a favorite of Rocky’s. While past storms once reduced its appeal, recent visits have shown it to be a great option again with gravel sections, making it a fitting setting for remembrance and camaraderie. After the hike, those interested can continue the conversation over lunch and drinks at Eli’s on Whitney. Parking at the state park is free for Connecticut-registered vehicles. The atmosphere is welcoming to LGBTQ+ individuals, allies, longtime participants, and first-time hikers.

    Tannersville and more

Small Batch Cellars, 37 Nettleton Ave, North Haven · verified Oct 9
    See details

An intimate night in the cellar at Small Batch Cellars pairs Tannersville with Model Decoy for a showcase of storytelling and genre-bending energy. Tannersville brings finely wrought Americana that focuses on everyday people and fleeting moments, delivered with singable melodies, textured arrangements, and harmonies with an instantly lived-in feel. Rooted in the Catskills since the early 1970s, the band first took shape at The Pinecone, an eight bedroom farmhouse on Route 23A at the base of Hunter Mountain during a vibrant musical period, and went on to open shows for the J. Geils Band and the Edgar Winter Group. They continue to write and record, and their fifth independent studio album, The Little Eureka Cafe, carries forward their character-centered songs and careful craft. This set features Scott Williams on vocals and rhythm guitar, Tim DeHuff on guitar, Rich Louie on bass, and Mike LaRocco on drums, with Tina Pagnini and Laura Pagnini on backing vocals. Model Decoy is the duo of Doron Monk Flake and Ari Sadowitz, rooted in rock with a generous streak of R&B that nods to the soul of Stevie Wonder and the grit of Soundgarden. Flake’s lyrics tip their hat to heroes and stories from comics and beyond, and the debut EP spins narratives about Thor, Hulk, Fantastic 4, Scott Pilgrim, Kill Bill, and the cult TV series Community. The project grew out of their earlier band The Smyrk, building on pop culture pieces like Dial V For Venom and The Ballad of Fletcher Reede, then digging deeper with The End of Jason Todd and Farewell to Arm, about Batman’s lesser known Robin and the horror comedy Evil Dead. Bruce Campbell praised their work on Twitter.

    Live-Scored Film Screening: Nosferatu (1922)

Neighborhood Music School, 100 Audubon St, New Haven · verified Oct 11
    See details

Neighborhood Music School presents a live-scored screening of Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, the 1922 silent vampire classic by F. W. Murnau, with an original blend of electronic music, percussion, and spoken word performed in sync with the film. The score is created by NMS teaching artist Istvan Peter B’Racz on synthesizer and piano, Thom Kozumplik on percussion, and Tom Burnett on spoken word and synthesizer, formerly of the band Sub-Verse. Costumes are encouraged, and anyone dressed as a vampire receives free admission. Spooky cocktails and snacks are available during the screening. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. There are two showings, and the program runs about one hour. Recommended for ages 12 and up. This presentation revives a long-running local tradition that began in 1994, when electronic musician and pianist Istvan Peter B’Racz and members of the electro-acoustic band Goo-Rilla first performed a live score for Nosferatu at Neighborhood Music School, later bringing it to venues across the region for nearly two decades. It returns to NMS for the first time since 2014. A cornerstone of German Expressionist cinema and a loose adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the film follows a young real estate agent and his wife who travel to Transylvania, encounter the vampire Nosferatu, and set out to defeat him. Although the movie was once lost due to a copyright dispute led by Bram Stoker’s widow, Florence, enthusiasts and musicians have worked to recover it and craft new scores over the years. This performance continues that tradition of keeping Murnau’s masterpiece alive.

    Rifle & Pistol Drills day

Blue Trail Range, 316 N Branford Rd, Wallingford
    See details

At Blue Trail Range, this rifle and pistol training day is intended for shooters with an intermediate or higher skill level. Participants work through structured drills that emphasize engaging multiple targets, moving with control, tightening accuracy, and using barricades. A shot timer and scored targets provide measurable feedback for each course of fire. Wear the gear configuration that fits your needs, whether low-visibility holsters and magazine pouches or overt setups like gun belts and tactical vests. Training includes steel target work, so ammunition must be solid copper jacketed lead core. Do not bring light armor piercing loads such as XM193 or SS109 steel core, Russian bi-metal, or any other round that does not meet these requirements. If ammunition restrictions apply, there will be ample paper target work with appropriate rounds. Plan to run a semi-automatic carbine or rifle with a tactical sling, along with a handgun. Bring at least five magazines for each platform, about 300 rounds for rifle and 300 for pistol, and a magazine pouch for the long gun. Use a strong-side draw holster only and pair it with a sturdy belt; small of back, ankle, shoulder, and cross-draw holsters are not permitted. Eye and ear protection are required, with electronic hearing protection preferred. Wear closed-toe shoes and dress for the weather. Pack water, a chair, and lunch. There is a restaurant on site that may not be open, and the schedule allows 45 minutes for a meal. Optional additions include a red dot sight, a low power optic, and spare batteries for electronics. A limited selection of items may be available to borrow or rent.

A genuine blues experience comes to North Haven with Rocky Lawrence, a seasoned artist who brings the golden era of the music to life. Known for honoring the legacy of Robert Johnson, he steps on stage in a coordinated suit, a Dobbs hat, and two tone shoes, playing a well loved Gibson Robert Johnson model. His sets carry the storytelling power of classic country blues and are delivered with unwavering conviction, whether solo or alongside other musicians. Rocky’s musical journey began at nine with the trumpet in a Connecticut home filled with the sounds of Louis Armstrong and Mahalia Jackson, with Armstrong as his first musical hero. By eleven he had fallen under the spell of Jimi Hendrix and moved to guitar. Learning Voodoo Child led him to the changes of Muddy Waters, then farther back to Robert Johnson and Son House. He also points out that Johnson drew from contemporaries like Son House and Lonnie Johnson. The tasting room features boutique wines and refreshing hard ciders from Apple Theory Cidery. This performance offers soulful playing that traces life’s highs and lows back to the crossroads at the heart of the blues.
