HOB Give Back - Saturday Food Giveaway

The HOB Give Back hosts a free food giveaway for anyone facing food insecurity or needing grocery assistance. Everyone is welcome. No identification is requested, except when needed to confirm households, since distribution is limited to one bag per household. Donations received through Good Neighbors are sorted for distribution, and each household may choose the items that best fit their needs. One bag per family can include fresh produce, breads, desserts, and meat. Availability varies, and some items may be limited per family. To keep things fair, the order of distribution is set by a lottery. You Da Bomb Baby!!

At The Funk, explore the art, science, and herbal roots of fizzy bathing in an interactive class devoted to making botanical bath bombs. Work with natural ingredients such as beneficial botanicals, essential oils, mineral-rich salts, and plant-based skin soothers while learning how the signature fizz forms when citric acid meets baking soda in water to release bubbles. The session also traces bathing traditions from ancient cultures like Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, and Japan, where aromatic herbs, woods, clays, and salts supported relaxation, cleansing, comfort, and restoration. Delve into formulation with calendula, lavender, rose, chamomile, butterfly pea flower, hibiscus, oat milk powder, Dead Sea salt, Epsom salt, colloidal oats, and clay minerals. Topics include skin calming strategies, supportive practices for the nervous system, maintaining color integrity with natural pigments, safe use of essential oils, and how herbal energetics can shape ritual bathing. The chemistry component covers humidity management, effective binders, balancing oils with powders, proper mold compression, and drying and curing, along with ways to avoid cracking, expansion, or crumbling. Put new skills into practice by crafting a personalized recipe, coloring with botanicals, pressing and molding bath bombs, creating layered or floral accents, building scent profiles, and learning simple packaging and storage methods. Participants leave ready to make stable, beautifully textured bath bombs at home.

Roots & Ritual: You Da Bomb Baby!! Bath Bomb Crafting

Dive into the art, chemistry, and herbal heritage of fizzy bathing in a hands-on workshop focused on crafting luxurious bath bombs with natural ingredients. Participants work with therapeutic botanicals, essential oils, mineral salts, and skin-friendly plant powders while learning how to formulate stable, beautifully textured creations at home. Instruction covers natural color choices, blending aromatic profiles, and the fundamentals of structure so each bath bomb holds its shape and performs well. The class also explores the long tradition of bathing as medicine practiced in cultures such as those of Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, and Japan. These time-honored rituals used mineral-rich waters, herbs, flowers, oils, clays, and salts to support relaxation, purification, muscle and joint comfort, skin health, nervous system ease, fever care, circulation, and reproductive wellness. Modern bath bombs grew from these practices, with their trademark fizz created when citric acid and baking soda meet water and release carbon dioxide. Guided practice includes humidity management, choosing binding agents, balancing oil-to-powder ratios, proper mold compression, and effective drying and curing to prevent cracking, expansion, or crumbling. Attendees blend a custom formula, use plant-based colorants, press and mold shapes, design layered or floral-topped pieces, build personalized essential oil scents, and finish by learning how to package and store their products.

Roots & Ritual: Summer Sizzle Tallow Sun Cream

At The Funk, a practical herbal class shows how to craft a nourishing tallow sun cream with mineral based protection and skin friendly botanicals. Participants learn to blend traditional animal fats and plant infusions with current, safe formulation practices to create a rich balm designed to support skin in sun, wind, and heat. The session builds core skills such as infusing herbs into oils, handling ingredients safely, and planning for shelf life and storage. Instruction explores how tallow’s fatty acids and vitamins contribute to a resilient skin barrier, the differences between grass fed and conventional sources, and the basics of rendering and purification. Guidance on sun exposure covers the benefits of moderate light, the distinction between UVA and UVB, signs of too much sun, and the role of antioxidants and emollients. The curriculum highlights botanicals often chosen for topical care, including calendula, lavender, green tea, sea buckthorn, and aloe vera, along with oils traditionally used to comfort skin after time outdoors. Mineral protection is addressed through zinc oxide in non nano form, proper dispersion, how physical products compare with chemical ones, and the real limits of assigning SPF at home. Safety topics include setting realistic expectations, patch testing, sun safe habits, protective clothing, reapplication, and appropriate essential oil dilution. Everyone takes home a jar of handmade tallow sun cream, a printed recipe booklet, an infusion guide, storage and shelf life notes, and a resource list for quality ingredients. The class emphasizes nourishment and simplicity while honoring modern safety practices and informed time in the sun.

Roots & Ritual: Summer Sizzle Tallow Sun Cream

This hands-on herbal workshop at The Funk focuses on crafting a nourishing tallow-based sun cream with traditional botanicals and modern, safe formulation practices. Participants learn how animal fats and plants have historically supported skin, then apply that knowledge to make a rich, water-resistant balm that combines herbs, oils, and mineral barriers for days spent in sun, wind, and heat. The class covers the basics of sun exposure, including the differences between UVA and UVB, signs of too much sun, and the role antioxidants and emollients play in comfort and resilience. It also explains why tallow is valued, touching on fatty acid composition, vitamins A, D, E, and K, support for the skin barrier, sourcing considerations such as grass fed versus conventional tallow, and simple rendering and purification steps. Attendees explore skin-supportive botanicals like calendula, lavender, green tea, sea buckthorn, and aloe vera. Instruction includes how to work with non nano zinc oxide as a physical blocker, how physical and chemical products differ, proper dispersion techniques, and the limits of do-it-yourself SPF, along with reminders about reapplication and protective clothing. During the make-and-take session, everyone formulates a customizable herbal tallow sun cream while reviewing realistic expectations for herbal preparations, patch testing, sun-safe habits, and essential oil dilution. Optional variations are discussed, such as using cocoa or mango butter for different textures, infusing carrot root or vanilla, and adding a light shimmer for a cosmetic touch. Each participant leaves with a jar of handmade herbal tallow sun cream, a printed booklet of recipes, an herbal infusion guide, clear storage and shelf-life notes, and a resource list for ingredient sourcing. The closing message emphasizes nourishment, simplicity, and respect for the body’s natural defenses, blending time-honored methods with current safety guidelines and informed sun practices.

Playwrights’ Workshop & Creative Lab

Richey Suncoast Theatre is introducing a collaborative workshop and creative lab that brings playwrights, actors, and directors into the same room to build new work from the ground up. It functions as a working studio rather than a lecture, offering a supportive setting where scripts are read aloud, explored in real time, and refined through immediate feedback. Participants collaborate to move stories from page to stage while strengthening cold reading, performance, and directing skills. The development cycle links writers with the artists who will bring their pieces to life and leads to a festival of original one-act plays. This space welcomes both experienced voices and those just getting started, and the only cost is commitment and creativity. To participate, playwrights can email Robert Grogan or Jess Glass with a 10-page writing sample or a clear project pitch, and actors and directors can reach out to share their interest in collaborating.
