Heads & Tails: Creative Creatures!

Instructor Linda Caldwell leads a three-session printmaking workshop focused on linoleum block printing. Participants learn core techniques and create an imaginative animal head and tail to print, trade, and share. All experience levels are welcome. The workshop begins with a short look at the history of linoleum block printing, hands-on practice making marks with V and U gouges with an emphasis on safety, and practical printing tips. Students then brainstorm and design their animal, transfer the drawing to linoleum blocks, and start carving. The next session centers on printing heads and tails and designing the front cover for a Heads and Tails book, with the practice block used for the back cover. The final session includes exchanging prints and assembling individual accordion books, which are provided. Block printing is an age-old printmaking method. An image is carved into a surface such as wood, linoleum, or rubber, inked, and pressed onto paper or fabric, and every impression has its own unique character. Cost: $195 for GVA members, $225 for non-members, plus a $40 materials fee.

Water to Spirits: Pathfinder

Spend a day that pairs river adventure with relaxed tastings. Begin at Brunswick Family Campground for check-in, a meet up with a knowledgeable guide, and outfitting with the necessary gear, then review safety before setting off to paddle a scenic six mile stretch of the Potomac. This calm route is generally quiet and full of wildlife, with opportunities to see bald eagles, herons, and other local wildlife. The paddle concludes at the Point of Rocks boat ramp, followed by a shuttle back to the campground to change for an afternoon of wine tasting. The outing continues in a caravan to the Pathfinder Farm Distillery Tasting Room in Boonsboro, Maryland, where participants can choose six of their current crafted spirits to sample, served alongside a charcuterie platter. Ideal for date day plans, a friends outing, or a group experience, it brings together time on the water and flavorful sips for a memorable day.

Running of the Bulls Charity Surf Redfish Tournament

Cast from the shores of Saint Simons and Jekyll Island during a land-based bull redfish surf tournament that supports the Kids Can Fish Foundation, a 501(c)(3) that provides free fishing opportunities for children. Billed as Georgia’s largest event of its kind, it spans more than ten miles of beach across two islands and caps the field at 375 anglers. Adult and Youth divisions award cash to the top five places, with total cash prizes exceeding $20,000 when the field is full. Expect extended fishing hours, optional early angler check-in to skip day-of lines, and a rain or shine experience. Entry is $85 for adults and $40 for youth ages 14 and under. An optional $25 Calcutta is open to all anglers and is decided by the redfish with the most spots, with a 70 percent payout and 30 percent donated to the foundation. Last year’s Calcutta paid $5,000. This is a self-certified catch, photo, video, measure, and release format. All measurements must be taken with the Rapala RMFR 60 inch Magnum Folding Ruler and no other device will be accepted. Catches are submitted to the tournament’s Facebook Group, and complete rules will be emailed to participants and posted there. Youth anglers compete for cash and prizes, and the top three in the Youth division receive custom Team Rainshadow surf rods built by Bandit Custom Rods. A special Baby Bull honor crowns the King or Queen of the Smalls with a trophy crafted by Alabama Burning and a fishing-related prize. Every registered angler is entered to win a custom surf cart from Surf Fishing Solutions, the first 150 registrants receive an extra entry, and free daily giveaways include rods, reels, fishing trips, and more. Free social gatherings add to the fun, featuring live music, food trucks, beverages, and raffles. The tournament is title sponsored by Cornerstone First Mortgage of Coastal Georgia and is hosted by, and benefits, the Kids Can Fish Foundation, so every registration helps create fishing adventures for youth anglers.

Jekyll Island Camp n Paddle

A coastal weekend centered on camping, saltwater kayak fishing, and practical skills, the Jekyll Island Camp n Paddle is a GKF gathering built around fall inshore opportunities and classic Golden Isles scenery. It is not a competition, and the pace suits first-time coastal paddlers as well as experienced inshore anglers interested in fishing alongside the GKF community. Autumn brings active inshore fishing here, with redfish moving along the coast and feeding around creeks, sandbars, and structure. Anglers typically focus on redfish, spotted sea trout, flounder, and sheepshead, exploring places like Jekyll Beach, the salt pond, the boneyard and Driftwood shoreline, Clam Creek, and protected marshes. These waters mix tidal creeks, shell bars, flats, and channels, offering chances to sight fish shallow reds when the tides line up or to work edges and drop-offs for trout and flounder. Throughout the weekend, the emphasis is on reading tides and marsh structure and timing launches to work with the current. Leaders and seasoned regulars share guidance on lure choices for redfish, trout, and flounder, safe approaches to areas such as Clam Creek and Jekyll Creek, and ways to handle wind and current from a kayak. Safety is a priority. Life jackets are required whenever on the water, and participants are encouraged to carry appropriate coastal safety gear and keep close watch on tides and weather. With time to fish multiple tide cycles and fit in sunrise and sunset sessions, evenings wind down around the campfire at Jekyll Island Campground, which offers RV hookups and primitive sites. GKF often provides a Saturday night meal, creating a relaxed setting to trade reports from different launch spots and plan the next tide strategy. Because interest is high and campsites on the island are limited, early reservations are recommended, and reviewing current access, parking, and launch rules ahead of arrival is advised.
