xBk presents a showcase from the School of Rock AllStars, featuring a select group of standout student musicians from around the world who spend the summer performing classic and contemporary rock across the United States. Fewer than one percent of School of Rock students earn AllStar status, and many alumni have moved on to touring careers, roles in Broadway productions, record deals, and appearances as finalists on televised competitions like The Voice and American Idol. This is an all ages event. Seating is limited and available on a first come, first served basis. ADA accommodations are available upon request. A limited number of reserved table add-ons are offered to guarantee seating for your group and do not include admission. Each table seats up to four, and every person still needs a general admission ticket. For example, a group of three would purchase three general admission tickets and one table add-on. Options include a Floor High-Top Side Table or a Premium Balcony High Top Table, each priced at $50 plus fees. Outside of the add-on options, seating remains first come, first served.

A popular jigsaw puzzle showdown returns to SingleSpeed Brewing Co. in Des Moines, presented by The Rook Room. Teams of up to four race to be the first to complete a 500-piece puzzle, and there is a playful twist that lets competitors sabotage other teams. The venue offers a menu with tasty bites, brews, and non-alcoholic options, so participants can enjoy food and drinks during the event and relax afterward. Reservations are required and space is limited. Entry is $50 per team of up to four and includes the puzzle to keep, and only one registration is needed per team. Author Ellen Cutler presents her new book From the Depths: Dyslexia, Bipolar Disorder, and the Triumph of Art, a biography and close look at the paintings of Gary Horn, also known as G Gray Horn. The event focuses on how learning disabilities and mental illness have shaped his subjects and style, tracing his journey from a troubled home in the nation’s heartland through service in Vietnam, a marriage without love, and fifteen turbulent years in New York City. Through it all, he has sought to live fully in the one identity he has always claimed, that of a painter. Rather than a simple story of obstacles erased and happiness secured, the book follows a creative life that is ambitious, tempered by hardship, and defined by perseverance. It serves both as a personal narrative and as an introduction to the work of a contemporary artist. Cutler brings experience from museum education and the art history classroom. She is at work on a novel inspired by her grandfathers’ World War One experiences and is exploring new ways to write about art. A curious generalist, she earned a modest win on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire in 2001. She lives in East Boston. Her dog, Ping, is named for the duckling in Marjorie Flack’s 1933 classic.

Those who plan to spin fire must have completed a reputable fire safety course and be able to show proof of experience. A relaxed loop ride hosted by Major Taylor Iowa starts and finishes at Water Works Park Amphitheater. The route covers about 17 to 20 miles on a mix of trails, neighborhood streets, and some roads. Riders circle Water Works Park and Gray’s Lake, roll through downtown Des Moines, cross the Inter-Urban trestle, head into the Beaverdale neighborhood, then return to the trail to close the loop. The pace typically ranges from 12 to 16 miles per hour and is adjusted to the group. New riders are welcome to try one ride, with free membership needed to continue on additional weeks. Meet near the restrooms for a quick photo and a short safety chat before departure. Helmets are required. Bringing water, lights, and flat repair supplies is recommended but not mandatory. A signed waiver is required to participate and is available before the ride.

Newcomer Ty MacAllan and his rescue dog enter the fray, while missing treasury funds and an escape-prone Belgian Malinois complicate everything. When the apparent suspect disappears and the least expected person is arrested, River and Ty race to uncover the truth before the last command in the ring turns deadly. Wichmann is a former print journalist from Iowa who writes women’s fiction, paranormal tales, and mysteries. With more than fifty years of training and show-ring experience, she has earned multiple Obedience Trial Championships and national rankings and has served as president, board member, class instructor, and trial chair with the Iowa City Dog Obedience Club. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication from Iowa State University and is a member of Sisters in Crime, the Dog Writers Association of America, the Iowa City Dog Obedience Club, and the United States Australian Shepherd Association. She and her husband run a third-generation family farm near the Amana Colonies in Iowa. Her other work includes How to Live with a Ghost from Pearl City Press.

Mentored by Nate Sparks, Nick Ruckert, and Dr. William Menefield, he has collaborated with artists such as Sean Jones, Isaiah Spencer, Benny Bennack III, Max Wellman, Jerome Gillespie II, and James Tutson. In 2023 he was the sole pianist for the National Jazz Band of America. Expect an engaging set that reflects his versatility as both a bandleader and a sought-after sideman.

Formed in 2017, the orchestra has performed throughout the state and, since Lichty’s move to Des Moines in 2020, has frequently filled shows at Noce. At Brightside Aleworks, a practical, hands-on workshop guides participants in crafting a custom epoxy river piece. Choose a project such as a charcuterie board, lazy susan, clock, key holder shelf, coasters, or a mini pair. Work with black walnut and other quality hardwoods, and select as many as two epoxy colors upon arrival. After the session, each piece needs about a week to cure, then moves into a careful finishing stage that usually takes 8 to 10 weeks. Timing can vary based on class size and shipping. When complete, finished projects are shipped so they arrive in excellent condition. Tickets are nonrefundable. If you cannot attend, someone may come in your place. Each participant age 12 or older needs a ticket, and a couples ticket lets two people collaborate on a single project.

The retreat weaves community building over shared food, a facilitated ketamine ceremony, integration work and a closing meal. Explore the cultural significance of printmaking in both Mexican and American contexts with CultureAll Ambassador Seso Marentes. Seso will demonstrate how to roll ink onto a linoleum carving and use rhythm to press an image. This technique has roots in methods many Mexican artists used to share news within their communities, and today it helps honor and continue the work of those who came before. Two of the most influential and acclaimed comics of the past century share the stage for an evening that pushes the boundaries of live comedy. The Best of Steve Martin & Martin Short pairs razor-sharp wit with a joyful, self-mocking spirit, as each aims to crack up the other as much as the crowd. Gags arrive at a brisk pace with minimal setup and big payoffs, poking fun at Hollywood and the fickleness of celebrity, and the energy peaks when the two affectionately and relentlessly roast one another. Their seamless timing reflects a friendship built over more than three decades, beginning with their work together on the 1986 film Three Amigos. They have toured as a duo since 2015, when they launched their first live show, A Very Stupid Conversation.
