Prairie River Counseling, in partnership with STARS Inc, offers a four-week equine assisted psychotherapy group designed for high school girls entering the 2026–2027 school year. The program supports teens during a key transition by nurturing confidence, self-worth, effective communication, and genuine connection with themselves and others. Each session focuses on practical skills that carry into family life, friendships, school, sports, and daily routines. Over the four weeks, participants explore how to build healthy relationships, develop positive body image and self-esteem, practice clear communication while navigating obstacles and problem solving, and then integrate these tools into everyday life. Equine assisted psychotherapy engages teens with horses as active partners in the therapeutic process. This experiential approach can be helpful for those who feel stuck in traditional talk therapy, prefer to move and work hands-on, or simply appreciate being around horses. As herd animals, horses are highly attuned to the people around them, often reflecting emotions and behaviors in ways that offer immediate insight and feedback. Sessions are facilitated by a STARS equine specialist together with the therapist. All activities take place on the ground and do not involve riding. Depending on the group’s goals, time may be spent grooming or observing the horses, sharing stories, creating, or completing activities alongside them. This group takes place outdoors when weather allows, so dressing for the conditions is encouraged. Water is available, and many participants bring a water bottle, bug spray, and sunscreen. The cost is $120, with payment plans available. Space is limited to 10 teens, and the event is non-refundable unless canceled by the host. Pre-registration is requested.

What began as a steep, triple-terraced backyard bordering a powerline easement and overgrown with volunteer trees, shrubs, and weeds has been steadily reshaped into native plant gardens. After early seeding of Little Bluestem and Side-oats Grama saw limited success because of inconsistent moisture, encouragement from the Loess Hills Chapter of Wild Ones led to planting a tray of native plants and trying new methods. Years of learning have produced four main gardens along with three to four smaller plantings. The two upper gardens are easy to reach, while the areas farther back include steps and steep slopes without handrails and are not advised for anyone with balance concerns or difficulty on uneven, grassy inclines. Visitors may wander at their own pace in an open yard setting, and refreshments will be available. Admission is free and all are welcome. The Loess Hills Chapter of Wild Ones is a non-profit that promotes native landscaping across Iowa, South Dakota, and Nebraska, highlighting how native plants support pollinators and other wildlife.

A relaxed garden walk hosted by Dawn Snyder and co-sponsored by the Sioux City Garden Club offers an inside look at a home landscape shaped by decades of conservation experience. This free, public, open yard format features unhurried wandering, friendly conversation, and refreshments while visitors see how a typical yard can evolve into a haven for native plants and pollinators. Dawn began converting her property in 2021, starting with a slim side strip once tricky to mow near the air conditioner. Wild strawberries, sedges, and wild onions took hold so well that the mower has stayed away from that area for five years. Beds now circle the back deck, and a formerly steep, hard-to-mow slope is filled with sun-loving natives. She keeps sentimental non-native favorites like iris, bleeding heart, daisies, and peonies while aiming for about 75 to 80 percent native plants. No herbicides or pesticides are used, with diversity doing the work instead, and dandelions are removed by hand. The yard is listed on the Homegrown National Park map, and new species are added each year through Loess Hills Wild Ones plant sales to expand habitat and reduce lawn. Out front, a magnolia shelters a native shade garden that provides a soft landing for insect larvae and other wildlife. After street work in 2025, the narrow strip between the sidewalk and curb was replanted with native buffalo grass, which rewards patience as it establishes. Dawn is active with Loess Hills Wild Ones and the Sioux City Garden Club, which has marked its 100th anniversary, and a bur oak from the club now anchors the front yard. The Loess Hills chapter of Wild Ones promotes native landscaping throughout Iowa, South Dakota, and Nebraska, highlighting how native plants support pollinators and other wildlife.

Hosted at the St. Francis Center, the 2026 installment of the Sr. Ruth Agnes Ahlers Lecture features Bishop John E. Keehner speaking on joyful service. As the eighth bishop of the Diocese of Sioux City, Bishop Keehner brings roots in the Diocese of Youngstown, Ohio, and academic formation in English, Latin American Studies, and Biblical Studies, along with a Master of Divinity and a licentiate in Canon Law. This annual lecture honors Sr. Ruth Agnes Ahlers, OSF (1917-2006), a Briar Cliff professor whose leadership from 1967 to 2000 helped the University and the Sioux City Diocese engage the theological developments of Vatican II. She is remembered for her devotion to the Eucharist and her conviction in the formative power of worship. Continuing each academic year, the series reflects Briar Cliff’s Catholic and Franciscan intellectual heritage and strengthens its commitment to faith, learning, and service.

Transcending Yoga and Prairie River Counseling are partnering to offer a one day workshop at Stone State Park Lodge centered on navigating loss and nurturing resilience. Designed for anyone who has experienced loss in any form, the focus is not on dissecting the deepest layers of grief, but on beginning to reclaim a sense of steadiness in the body, honoring the parts of self touched by loss, and tending the inner strength that is already there. Nature based experiences are combined with somatic practices to invite reflection and reconnection. Through a blend of evidence based and holistic approaches, participants are encouraged to realign with mind, body, and soul while attuning to the surrounding natural systems. Expect a compassionate setting where loss is acknowledged and resilience can take root. The day includes ecotherapy, somatic therapy, sound baths, gentle Yin yoga, creative art making, and gentle movement. Participants begin to cultivate resilience in the midst of loss, return to the present moment, slow their pace, validate and be with emotions, rediscover comfortable movement in the body, and build grounding and stability.

Squads will compete at some of Siouxland’s premier football facilities, with plans to utilize three venues and official site details to be announced. Early registration offers a reduced entry fee of $150 per team, followed by a standard fee of $300 per team after the early window. Discounts are available for programs entering multiple teams. Interest is already strong, with 13 teams registered and more expected. TNT Football Academy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and every dollar raised from the tournament goes directly back into supporting youth football development in local communities, helping young athletes participate, improve, and grow in the game.
