This pre-season work day focuses on freshening and reorganizing the building from top to bottom. Tasks range from general cleaning such as windows, bathrooms, dusting, and vacuuming to paint touch-ups and reorganization. Everyone is welcome, and plenty of help is needed. Two shifts are available, and a sign-up link is provided. Work will span the lobbies, auditorium, restrooms, and outdoor areas. In the lobbies, efforts include washing glass and interior doors, touching up gray paint on walls and doors, mopping and vacuuming floors, dusting light fixtures, painting railings, cleaning window sills, organizing storage spaces, dusting tables and radiators, polishing mirrors, and deep cleaning the concession area including bars, counters, refrigerators, freezers, and drawers, with trash removal throughout. In the auditorium, tasks include washing seat backs, sweeping the rear platform, cleaning all sets of double doors, vacuuming carpet, touching up black paint on the back wall, and emptying trash. Restroom duties include cleaning counters, cabinet doors, mirrors, sinks, handrails, toilets, urinals, and stall walls, mopping floors, restocking hand towels and toilet paper, replacing air fresheners as needed, and taking out trash. Outdoors, the work includes pulling and trimming weeds, painting the fence around the small dumpster, refreshing paint on railings, planters, and the picnic table, sweeping the front entryway, and cleaning and organizing the loading dock area.

At the Contemporary Art Center of Peoria, this Argentine tango practica offers a welcoming space to refine social dance skills in the second floor gallery. For this special session, Jacob Xavier leads a focused teaching segment first, followed by open practice time. The practica serves dancers of any level who have received instruction and want dedicated time to work on technique, and it also welcomes absolute beginners who are willing to attend regularly as a sign of commitment to the dance and the organizers. Harmonize Peoria’s Garage Band Open Stage returns for a 10 week summer series that is free and open to all ages, with stage time prioritized for artists under 21. Each installment features a different local host band, and for this session the hosts will be announced. The format is simple. The hosts start with a few songs, then the sign up list opens and the stage becomes a community jam. Performers can play solo, collaborate with the hosts, or team up with other attendees to form a band. Total beginners are welcome to try the instruments even if they are not ready to step into the spotlight. A full backline with instruments and gear is available, and personal equipment is welcome. A dedicated sound person supports the performances, and the setting is friendly and low pressure so people can play, explore, and connect. There is ample seating. Chips and soda will be sold, personal chairs and snacks are allowed, and alcohol is not permitted. Each week brings its own musical vibe with a new host band. Organizers are also keeping an eye out for young bands they have not seen before, with the possibility of inviting one to host an upcoming TBA date. This program receives project support through Arts Dollars funds provided by the Illinois Arts Council Agency, ArtsPartners of Central Illinois, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Community Foundation of Central Illinois.
Bicycle Basics Workshop

Antiquarian bookseller and professor of art and history Jonah Rosenberg, Head of Rare Books at Arader Galleries, leads a conversation in the Giant Screen Theater exploring historical maps featured in the exhibition The Promise of Liberty. With more than a decade of experience and academic credentials that include an A.B. in Classics from Brown and a D.Phil in Classical Archaeology from Oxford, Rosenberg discusses notable works such as the 1755 Mitchell Map, recognized as the most comprehensive colonial era map of eastern North America. A mysterious shipwreck brings Count Dracula ashore, and Van Helsing is called in to help the group confront the vampire’s growing threat. Performers are sought for Dracula, Renfield, Mina Murray, Jonathan Harker, Lucy Westenra, Dr. Seward, and Van Helsing, along with an ensemble that will portray servants, asylum attendants, and Dracula’s brides. Several roles note age guidelines such as 20s to 40s, while Dracula and Renfield are age flexible. Renfield requires significant physicality with energetic movement and staged combat. Van Helsing is open in age and gender, with the director welcoming a woman in the role. Auditions include presenting a monologue followed by cold readings from the script. The production embraces a darker approach that stages the violence and the resulting trauma found in the source material. A fight choreographer and intimacy coordinators are part of the team to support safety throughout the process. Prospective participants are encouraged to review the script in advance to understand the thematic content and the physical and emotional demands. Backstage help is also needed, especially in hair and makeup to manage onstage aging effects, vampiric transformations, and extensive blood effects during performances.

The troupe of musicians, circus artists, and puppeteers travels on a handmade raft, sharing performances in riverfront communities along their route. This stop takes place at Riverfront Park near the RiverPlex by the water. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and plan to arrive early for a comfortable view. The shoreline can be uneven and steep in spots, while a flat path above offers easier wheelchair access. The performance is best enjoyed from land, and boats are asked not to gather behind the performance area. Admission costs nothing, and voluntary contributions of 10 to 25 dollars per person help support the nonprofit.
