Drawn from journals, letters, and a soundtrack of emotionally charged pop music, these stories blend elements of oral history, memoir, and a Gen X point of view. Character and Plot, Plot and Character: A One-Day Masterclass with James Patrick Kelly

Designed for writers who have pages under their belt yet want their work to connect more powerfully, this one-day masterclass at Southern NH University explores how character and plot drive each other from the first scene to the final line. Led by award-winning writer and editor James Patrick Kelly, the day translates proven craft insights into concrete techniques that can be used immediately. The morning focuses on character, with guidance on developing believable, layered protagonists and supporting casts that feel at home in the story’s world, and on using desire, fear, and choice to create forward motion. The afternoon turns to plot, emphasizing how events can grow naturally from character complications, how to build a strong opening, a coherent middle, and a satisfying ending, and how to spot thin scenes, sluggish middles, and finales that do not land. Participants gain practical strategies for strengthening character and plot, tools for confident revision, a clearer understanding of why stories stall and how to fix them, and a shared vocabulary to apply to future projects. Two of Kelly’s craft essays are emailed in advance so attendees arrive prepared: You and Your Characters, first published in WRITING SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY edited by Gardner Dozois, St. Martins Press, 199, and The Three Laws of Great Endings, first published in POCKET WORKSHOP edited by Tod McCoy and M. HUW Evens, Hydra Press, 2021. Continental breakfast and lunch from Popovers in Epping are included. James Patrick Kelly has received the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Awards and has published more than a hundred stories translated into eighteen languages. His work includes The Promise of Space, Mother Go (Audible Original), and King of the Dogs, Queen of the Cats. He is a longtime columnist for Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine, recently retired after 15 years on the faculty of the Stonecoast Creative Writing MFA Program at the University of Southern Maine, and has co-edited multiple science fiction anthologies.

Sound Bath, Reiki Healing & Cacao Ceremony

At Henderson Community Park, Christina of Mystic Healing Moon leads a sacred cacao ceremony alongside a soothing sound bath and a reiki healing circle. A Reiki Master, certified sound healer, and spiritual life coach, she guides participants to share cacao in community, set intentions, release what no longer serves, and draw an oracle card for insight, then settle in as this gentle, nonpsychedelic plant medicine encourages heart opening and meaningful manifestation. Through guided meditation, resonant sound, and reiki energy work, attendees can explore deeper connection with the earth, their higher self, and supportive spirit guides. The gathering closes with time for thoughtful conversation or quiet contemplation, followed by a blessing to carry into daily life. For comfort, bring a yoga mat, blanket, or pillow, as many people prefer to lie down during the meditation. Extra mats and blankets will be available. A journal, pen, and water bottle are helpful to have on hand. An optional altar item may be brought and will be returned afterward. Seating is limited. The cost is $35 per person and can be reserved through Venmo, PayPal, or cash by messaging the Mystic Healing Moon page. Joan Blackford, his mother, is a woman in her fifties to sixties who presents as polished and traditional, maintains control, and is deeply in denial. Aunt Helen, in her forties to fifties, is eccentric and outspoken, using humor to cope and often serving as the family’s truth teller. Austin, mid twenties to mid thirties, is Wesley’s former best friend who is quiet, kind, and emotionally repressed. Maddie, mid twenties to mid thirties, is Wesley’s ex girlfriend who is well meaning, a bit awkward, and still finding her footing. Dean, in his thirties to forties, is Wesley’s older brother who is blunt, rough around the edges, and protective. Pastor Mike, fifty and older, is charismatic and authoritative, grounded in doctrine. Evening at the Falls

Join an Early Bird Class where you can paint a beautiful picture. You can twist it whichever way you want to, be it coffee, mimosas, or just doing the worm. There isnt really an age limit for kids, but they should be able to sit still for at least 30 mins at a time. You can bring in food and snacks to munch on as you paint. If you cant draw a stick figure, no problem, any complicated shapes will either be pre-sketched or stencils will be provided. If you really think you messed up the painting, you can always come back for a Free SOS class where they will help you fix your Painting for FREE. Arrive 10-15 minutes early to get uncorked and in your seat! You are welcome to bring in any food and non-alcoholic drink to enjoy during class. Please do not bring your own alcohol, as they sell wine and beer. Everyone will be carded before serving. Seating is first come, first serve, except with groups of 5 or more. If you are in a group or celebrating a special event, please let them know in the notes section so they can seat you together. Classes with little or no signups are subject to cancellation or change in art. It is requested that you sign up early, as it is very sad when people show up for class and they are not there!

Planting at EVPL East is part of the work to establish the EVPL East Community Garden, a project funded by the EVPL Foundation that aims to turn a library green space into a welcoming hub for food access, education, wellness, and community connection. Taking shape in spring 2026, this activity focuses on planting in the garden space and helping bring the new community garden to life. It follows earlier efforts for building raised beds and sowing seeds, continuing steady progress toward a shared, learning-focused garden at EVPL East.

Blue Moon Floating Sound Bath

Float peacefully in a private pool beneath a rare blue full moon while the resonant tones of quartz crystal bowls sing by candlelight. Full moons are often a time to reflect on what has been accomplished, release what no longer serves, and welcome fresh beginnings, with heightened intuition and emotion guiding the process. A blue moon appears only every two to three years as the second full moon in a single lunar month, adding a special sense of rarity to this experience. The immersive sound bath is intended to support stress relief, better sleep, and easing of discomfort, creating a deeply relaxing atmosphere. No experience is required and an open mind is encouraged. Tickets are $50. Plan to arrive a little early so there is time to get comfortably and safely settled on dry air mattresses before the sound begins. For extra comfort, bring a pillow, a cozy blanket, and anything else that helps you relax. Eye masks will be available, or bring your own.

Learn, Build, Play! at Boonville-Warrick Library

At Boonville Warrick County Public Library, acclaimed musician and educator Monte Skelton leads an interactive instrumental music experience that brings parents and children together through collaboration. It begins with a high-energy, crowd-made rhythm warmup of stomps, snaps, and claps, then explores instrument families as Monte blends winds, strings, and electronic sounds such as the EWI, layering them with live looping to create a full ensemble. Participants move from watching to creating during the Parent-Child Loop Challenges, where volunteers step on stage to record sounds and help assemble a song in real time, showing how every contribution counts. The finale is a hands-on build session focused on partner instruments designed to be played together, so families head home with their own creations and inspiration to keep making music. Designed for children ages 4 to 10 with their parents, the program lasts one hour, with 40 minutes of performance and 20 minutes devoted to instrument building.
