Westward Expansion and the Flatboat Era

Discover the often overlooked story of westward expansion by river in a presentation led by Katie Pappano of The Scenic Lincoln Way. The program traces Abraham Lincoln’s 1828 flatboat journey at age 19 from Rockport, Indiana to New Orleans with his friend Alan Gentry to sell produce from the Spencer County area, then connects that voyage to a 2028 bicentennial reenactment planned by the not-for-profit Scenic Lincoln Way, featuring a flatboat built and christened The Abraham. The talk contrasts the familiar image of covered wagons departing western Missouri for the Oregon and California Trails, a route attempted by 500,000 pioneers, with the larger movement of three million pioneers who traveled west by flatboat from Pittsburgh after the Revolutionary War. Attendees will learn how this Great Migration used the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to move into the Midwest, along with more about the planned reenactment trip.
