Everybody look around as the winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical arrives in Muncie with a newly reimagined tour following its Broadway run. This vibrant revival retells Dorothy’s search for belonging in a contemporary world, powered by a score that mixes soul, gospel, rock, and 70s funk. Reviewers have celebrated the production for thrilling performances, striking choreography, and imaginative design. Inspired by L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the story is reframed as an all-Black musical celebration that reshaped Broadway history. The original 1975 production earned seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score, along with honors for featured performances, choreography, direction, and costume design. Signature songs like Ease on Down the Road and Home became enduring favorites, and a 1978 film adaptation featured Diana Ross, Ted Ross, Mabel King, Richard Pryor, and Lena Horne, while marking Quincy Jones’s first collaboration with Michael Jackson. Recommended for ages 8 and up. The performance runs about 2 hours and 20 minutes with an intermission. Special effects include haze, smoke, and flashing lights.
