At Dishman McGinnis Elementary School Gym, the 7th annual back to school block party welcomes youth ages 18 and under for a free community celebration. The event features free school supplies and backpacks for kids, one per child while supplies last, with over 200 backpacks available. Children must be present to receive these items, which are offered on a first come, first served basis. Free raffle prize giveaways run throughout the event alongside booths from vendors, community agencies and nonprofit organizations. Motivational speakers include City Commissioner Carlos Bailey, City Commissioner Dana Beasley Brown, Patti Minter, Cierra Waller, Gambina Flemister and others. Resources available include wellness checkups, Medicaid assistance and dental care. Entertainment includes live DJ sets by DJ REEK and Jay as well as performances by local artists. There will be games and activities, plus Knock-Out and 3-Point contests. Complimentary hot dogs and water are available for everyone, and kids can enjoy free ice cream on a first come, first served basis. The small class size allows focused guidance while encouraging self-expression, and no prior singing experience is required. Tuition is a $85 monthly flat rate. Each class requires at least three students and is limited to six. Classes align with the Warren County Schools calendar, and students perform together in a recital.
