    Hosparus Health Barren River is hosting a free Patient and Family Support Volunteer training designed for people who want to offer companionship, support, and a caring presence to patients and families. Volunteers typically serve in the county closest to where they live, including Warren, Allen, Simpson, Metcalfe, Monroe, and Edmonson. Training highlights ways to provide companionship and emotional support, offer respite visits for caregivers, deliver care blankets, and serve veterans through dedicated volunteer support. A minimum commitment of two hours each month is requested. Registration is required for all sessions, and documentation of COVID-19 vaccination is required before beginning service. If scheduled dates are not a fit, in-person training and orientation can be arranged.     7th Annual Back to School Block Party

    At Dishman McGinnis Elementary School Gym, the 7th annual back to school block party welcomes youth ages 18 and under for a free community celebration. The event features free school supplies and backpacks for kids, one per child while supplies last, with over 200 backpacks available. Children must be present to receive these items, which are offered on a first come, first served basis. Free raffle prize giveaways run throughout the event alongside booths from vendors, community agencies and nonprofit organizations. Motivational speakers include City Commissioner Carlos Bailey, City Commissioner Dana Beasley Brown, Patti Minter, Cierra Waller, Gambina Flemister and others. Resources available include wellness checkups, Medicaid assistance and dental care. Entertainment includes live DJ sets by DJ REEK and Jay as well as performances by local artists. There will be games and activities, plus Knock-Out and 3-Point contests. Complimentary hot dogs and water are available for everyone, and kids can enjoy free ice cream on a first come, first served basis. The gathering creates a safe space that promotes peace, love, diversity and unity for youth and the community. Attendees are asked to be safe, be respectful and follow announcements and instructions.
