    Free

An interactive storytime in the Lewiston Public Library’s Children’s Department welcomes young listeners. It is designed for children ages 2 to 6 with a caregiver, and siblings are welcome. Sessions feature read-alouds, lively songs, and simple movement activities that support early literacy. This installment spotlights the BookReach Volunteer Reading Program, a community collaboration in which volunteers bring storytime to children in licensed family childcare homes and centers. Launched in 1997 through a grant from L.L.Bean and now supported by the Lewiston and Auburn Public Libraries, BookReach works to cultivate a community of readers by sharing the joy of books. There is no cost to attend, it is open to all, and advance registration is not required.

    Bailey Library Murals Unveiling

C.M. Bailey Public Library, 39 Bowdoin St, Winthrop · verified Aug 9
    Free

Bailey Public Library will unveil two new large-scale murals at a free event open to everyone. Attendees can be among the first to view the artworks and hear about the historical themes and community traditions that shaped them. The pieces were created by Maine artists Chris Cart and Jen Greta Cart, who bring extensive public art experience. Chris Cart holds Signature Member status with the National Watercolor Society, has illustrated over thirty books, and has exhibited across Maine and beyond. Jen Greta Cart has partnered on major public mural projects, including the large Many Stitches Hold Up the Sky in Brunswick. The mural on the adult side of the library offers a visual narrative of Winthrop, interweaving Abenaki heritage, early settlement and industry, apple orchards and agriculture, along with nods to Maine authors connected to central Maine and the library. The companion mural in the children’s area draws on Winthrop’s literary and cultural roots, featuring imagery such as orchards, the historic railroad trestle, storybook characters inspired by the library’s annual holiday parade, local authors, music, and other symbols tied to the community and the library. Both murals will remain as permanent installations that honor Winthrop’s history, literature, and traditions.
