Workout Wednesdays at Beacon Park
This outdoor fitness series at Beacon Park delivers energizing workouts and practical coaching to keep the middle of the week moving. Instructors from First Responders 4 Fitness and Easy Day Boxing Gym lead with upbeat motivation and expert guidance that supports wellness across mind, body, nutrition, and spirit. Sessions are free and open to all, and participants should bring their own mat and towel. After class, participants may visit Lumen Detroit for a healthy drink or a post workout bite. The series is presented with support from the DTE Beacon Park Foundation and is produced by the Downtown Detroit Partnership.
Movie Nights
A six-week outdoor movie series brings cinema to Ralph Wilson Park on the West Riverfront, presented by the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy with support from Huron-Clinton Metroparks. Settle in on the lawn, pick a comfortable spot, take part in pre-show activities, and unwind with family and friends as the sky darkens and the film begins. Bring blankets and any snacks you would like. Movies screen at the DTE Foundation Summit. Food is available on-site for purchase each week. The lineup features Hoppers, Jaws (the original), Dreamgirls, Jurassic Park (the original), GOAT, and Michael. Parking options include Jefferson Ave, Rosa Parks, and Cabacier, as well as the nearby Bagley Mobility Hub and Assembly Garages.

Now in its 17th year, this celebration also recognizes 20 years of the Detroit HBCU Network’s service in Metro Detroit focused on advocacy, awareness, and alignment. Across multiple days, attendees reconnect with classmates, meet alumni from around the country, build new relationships, recognize outstanding leaders, support current students, and uplift the transformative HBCU experience. The program features a kickoff happy hour, the Detroit HBCU Honors celebration, a cookout on the yard, a student care package giveaway, and meaningful opportunities for networking, fellowship, and community engagement. The weekend also serves as the Detroit HBCU Network’s biggest fundraiser, with proceeds sustaining year-round programming, educational initiatives, student support efforts, and the Class Is In Session Scholarship Fund that helps Metro Detroit students attending HBCUs. Detroit’s longstanding Black LGBTQ+ Pride celebration returns with the 31st Annual Hotter Than July, recognized as the longest-running Black LGBTQ+ Pride event in the world. Spanning four days, the weekend highlights community, culture, advocacy, art, faith, nightlife, and celebration. The schedule features meaningful conversations, community healing, live entertainment, film screenings, dancing, and Detroit’s Palmer Park Picnic. Whether returning or attending for the first time, attendees will find a gathering rooted in Black queer excellence, joy, resilience, and community. This year’s theme is You Are / We Are Hotter Than July. Many community activities are free, while select partner nightlife events have individual admission. Take part in the Community Bike Ride Series presented by Hamtramck Parks Conservancy. Each ride starts and ends at Veterans Park, spans about 5 to 10 miles, and lasts roughly one hour. Comerica Park hosts a special Donate Life Night as the Detroit Tigers take on the Kansas City Royals, with supporters working to fill more than 700 seats in celebration of organ, eye, and tissue donation. From that collision of groove and machines, the Belleville Three, Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson, forged what came to be known as Detroit techno. The artists on this lineup carry that story forward. Inside, Keith Tucker opens the room. The Aux 88 cofounder and head of Puzzlebox Records, a pivotal figure in Detroit electro since the late 80s, brings a direct, machine-driven approach to set the tone. Shawescape Renegade follows, threading between techno and electro with a raw, functional pulse that maintains momentum. Ectomorph closes, the duo of Erika and BMG who also run Interdimensional Transmissions, favoring stripped back structures with an emphasis on tension, space, and heavy rhythm. On the patio, JMT starts things off, a KMS Records affiliated DJ moving fluidly through house, techno, and ghetto tech with a versatile, club-focused style. Detroit In Effect follows with DJ Maaco at the helm, an enduring electro project marked by rugged drumwork, weighty bass, and a blend of electro and Detroit club flavors active since the early 90s, sustaining the project after the passing of cofounder O'Dell Perry, also known as DJ PDog.

Magic Bag presents Save Ferris on the It Means Everything 29 Year Anniversary Tour, with WIPEOUT. This all ages event is standing room only. Formed in 1995, Save Ferris became a key name in the third wave of ska, blending ska, punk, and rock from Orange County and building a reputation around Monique Powell’s powerful vocals. Momentum grew when KROQ’s Rodney Bingenheimer aired their version of Dexys Midnight Runners’ Come on Eileen, which led to regular rotation and industry attention. The band won a Grammy showcase for best unsigned act in 1996, signed with Epic Records, and followed with the debut album It Means Everything in 1997 and Modified in 1999 before taking a break. Powell later returned and re-formed the band, delivering major Southern California shows and a crowdfunded EP, Checkered Past, produced by John Avila of Oingo Boingo with a guest appearance by Neville Staple of The Specials. Save Ferris went on to perform the main stage of the 2017 Warped Tour, continued headlining and festival dates worldwide, and is working on the first new album in nearly two decades.
