This playful, spacefaring tale follows three travelers from distant galaxies who collide on a lonely asteroid and must navigate clashing languages and values while longing for home. The story asks whether they can bridge their differences and reach for the stars together. The production extends a 27-year tradition of imaginative, physically dynamic, visually striking, award-winning work, with choreography, script, music, projection and lighting design, and performances by Twin Cities artists. One performance offers ASL interpretation and audio description. Seating is fully accessible at tour locations, while restroom access is limited. The Neighborhood Garage Tour centers inclusion and access for artists and audiences of all abilities, thoughtfully weaving verbal and nonverbal communication into the artistry so that accessibility is part of the performance. The annual tour has been spotlighted on TPT’s MN Original and Fox 9 News, and has reached more than 3,600 Minnesotans with 120 performances of four original works presented across 44 neighborhoods in 17 municipalities throughout the Twin Cities metro. A pioneer of folktronica with a voice that has deepened over three decades, Orton traces a path from Trailer Park and Comfort of Strangers through 2022’s self-produced Weather Alive to a new collection that feels more direct and urgent, marked by resilience and midlife perspective. The Ground Above unfolds in two parts, pairing love and grief as parallel truths, and reflects a collaborative spirit with contributions from Shahzad Ismaily, Sam Beste of Vernon Spring, drummers Tom Skinner and Chris Vatalaro, and bassist Tom Herbert.
