    Antibalas

The Parkway Theater, 4812 Chicago Ave S, Minneapolis · verified Aug 30
    See details

Presented by KFAI’s Temposphere at The Parkway Theater, this all-ages concert spotlights Antibalas, the Brooklyn-rooted ensemble that helped reignite Afrobeat for audiences around the world. Inspired by Fela Kuti, the group turns every instrument into part of the groove, with horns, bass, guitars, keys, and percussion interlocking to create dance-ready rhythms. Their sound threads Afrobeat with Latin flavors, jazz sophistication, funk grit, classical touches, and soul, shaped by players who listen closely to one another and build momentum through musical conversation. Formed in 1997, the band’s name translates from Spanish as bulletproof or anti bullet, a fitting nod to a style that travels widely and influences many. Members of the horn section have appeared on Grammy-winning recordings by Angelique Kidjo and Mark Ronson and contributed to dozens of albums, soundtracks, and live collaborations with artists including The Roots, My Morning Jacket, TV on the Radio, Santigold, Jovanotti, Nneka, Alabama Shakes, The String Cheese Incident, Paul Simon, and Public Enemy. Alumni have recorded and performed with The Dap Kings, Mark Ronson, The Black Keys, the Arks, Menahan Street Band, the El Michels Affair, Arcade Fire, Iron and Wine, Bat For Lashes, and Imogen Heap. Their most recent release, Hourglass on Daptone Records, returns to an instrumental focus, carrying forward themes from earlier vocal work by communicating through melody and rhythm for broader accessibility. The album moves from ecstatic 12-8 pulses to swing in the vein of Machito and 1970s Ghanaian dance bands like Gyedu Blay-Ambolley, revisits classic Lagos-style Afrobeat through a Brooklyn lens, and closes with a journey into psychedelic, freedom-minded funk. Coverage from outlets such as Rolling Stone has praised their exuberant approach to Afrobeat, and the live set is known for polyrhythmic, horn-driven power that keeps bodies moving.

The 2026 Rice Park Music Series brings free concerts to Rice Park with a curated lineup of Minnesota-based musicians and a variety of local food trucks. This rescheduled, added installment spotlights Mary Cutrufello, a veteran performer whose 35-plus-year career spans Texas honky-tonk, Midwestern roots rock, and commanding acoustic sets. She has appeared on The Tonight Show and on Austin City Limits twice, and has toured throughout all 50 states as well as in several European countries. USA Today praised her fierce guitar work and gritty, blistered-throat vocals, while The Washington Post highlighted her rough-hewn voice and her gift for portraying small towns and the often desperate characters who live there. The series is presented in partnership with St. Paul Parks and the St. Paul Downtown Alliance, with talent booking managed by Ostrom Entertainment LLC.

Off-Leash Area marks the 10th anniversary of its Neighborhood Garage Tour with Stardust Rendezvous, the company’s 37th original production. This whimsical sci-fi tale follows three travelers from faraway galaxies who crash on a lonely asteroid. Separated by language and values, and feeling homesick and uncertain, they work to bridge their differences and reach for something bigger together. One performance includes ASL interpretation. Audience seating is fully accessible at every tour stop, with limited accessibility in restrooms. The Garage Tour centers inclusion and access for artists and audiences of all abilities, with spoken and nonverbal elements intentionally woven into the performance so that accessibility is part of the art. Extending a 27-year legacy of inventive, high-energy, visually striking and award-winning work, the piece features choreography, script, music, projection design, lighting design, and performances created by Twin Cities artists. The event is hosted by Erin Landers and Jonah Udall. Highlighted on TPT’s MN Original and Fox 9 News, the annual Garage Tour has reached more than 3,600 Minnesotans through 120 performances of four original productions across 44 neighborhoods in 17 municipalities. See details

An intimate duo performance features Bettye LaVette with Etienne Stadwijk on keyboards, creating a close-up setting that centers her voice and storytelling. Across the set, she revisits songs and memories from a 64-year career, letting each piece reflect her distinctive approach to interpretation. Her journey began in Detroit in 1962 at age sixteen with the Atlantic Records single My Man-He’s A Lovin’ Man, followed by recordings on several major labels through the 1960s and 1970s. She also appeared on Broadway in Bubbling Brown Sugar alongside Honi Coles and Cab Calloway. Since a major resurgence in 2000, her honors have included the R&B Foundation’s Pioneer Award, multiple Blues Music Awards, inductions into both the Blues Hall of Fame and the R&B Hall of Fame, the Americana Music Association’s Legacy Award, and seven Grammy nominations. Celebrated by the New York Times as one of the foremost soul interpreters of her generation, she is often praised for making any song entirely her own, with producer Steve Jordan comparing her artistry to the timeless impact of Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, and Miles Davis. Now 80 and still creating vital recordings, she remains one of the rare artists from the birth of 1960s soul who continues to perform with undiminished power.

Building on the earlier work of the late Walter R. Scott Sr., the documentary continues a tradition of profiling Black Minnesotans who have flourished across many professions before and after the Civil Rights era. Scott’s self-published titles include the Centennial Edition of the Minneapolis Beacon from 1956, Minneapolis Negro Profile from 1968, and Minnesota’s Black Community from 1976. The screening is free and open to the public, and registration is required. The film and books by Minnesota’s Black Community Project and Walter R. Scott Sr. will be available for purchase at the event. The showing takes place at the Minnesota Historical Society.

Although his father initially encouraged a military path, Vieux earned his blessing to pursue music shortly before Ali’s passing. He began with drums and calabash at Mali’s Institut National des Arts, then quietly shifted to guitar in 2001. Early collaborations with his father became part of his debut release and are among Ali’s final recordings. During the touring shutdown of 2020 he focused on his craft in a studio he built at his family’s compound, leading to Les Racines in 2022, a return to deep roots and the desert blues tradition he has long explored. That same year he joined forces with Houston psych rock group Khruangbin on a collaborative album that Sir Elton John praised as one of the albums of the year and absolutely wonderful music. With each project he pushes into new territory and strengthens his reputation as a singular, innovative artist.
