Retracing the Lewis and Clark Expedition

Bass Lake Park, 3208 Mills Lake Wynd, Holly Springs · verified Aug 2
    Free

At the Bass Lake Park conference room, National Geographic Explorer Dr. Roland Kays shares a first-hand look at a modern wildlife resurvey that retraces the route of Lewis and Clark. Fresh from leading a team of biologists across the United States, he collaborated with the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute and local experts to document animals along the same path traveled more than two centuries ago. The program also features Matt Jones, Head of Digital Media at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. Together they will compare today’s findings with observations recorded in the 1804 to 1806 journals and recount stories from the field. Expect vivid footage gathered through continent-spanning camera traps and on-the-water observations by canoe and kayak, along with treks through wetlands, forests, and prairies. The presentation includes a preview of videography planned for a forthcoming documentary for national media. Dr. Kays directs the Biodiversity Research Lab at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences and serves as a research scientist at NC State University. His work blends technology such as GPS tracking and camera traps with traditional field studies and research in museum collections. He also shares wildlife science through the Wild Animals YouTube channel and the NC Museum of Natural Sciences’ Wild Animals Podcast. Admission is free, with optional donations at registration to support conservation work. Space is limited, so advance registration is recommended. Refreshments will be available, and attendees will have the opportunity to meet Dr. Kays and Matt Jones.
