Free events in Gastonia, NC

A different host guides this singer and songwriter open mic, and performers of every stripe are invited. Musicians and vocalists are welcome, as are comedians, poets, drummers, and anyone looking to jam. There is no cover charge, and signups happen at the bar.

Families can experience a hands-on showcase of a wide range of vehicles at Harold Rankin Park. Children can get up close to the equipment with opportunities to see and touch. This community cleanup focuses on picking up litter along 2nd Avenue. Supplies are provided. Participants should bring water and dress appropriately. Street parking is available on 2nd and Clay Street, and the Little Theater of Gastonia is an easy map reference.

A free catch and release fishing derby for children and teens ages 17 and under takes place at Goat Island Park. Recognition is planned for the largest fish, the smallest fish, and the most fish caught. Participants 15 and under do not need a fishing license. A free community document shredding event by Shred-it takes place at Town Hall as part of Arbor Day festivities. Residents can bring paper documents containing personal information for secure shredding, including unneeded financial documents, unnecessary receipts and bills, expired policies, junk mail, shipping labels, and photos. Do not bring specialty information storage or other types of waste, since this event focuses on paper only. Community Shred-it events help prevent identity theft and promote sustainability by recycling all shredded material, and a single event can result in the recycling of more than 70 tons of paper. The day also features a fishing derby, a tree planting ceremony, snacks, crafts, a book swap, and a documentary viewing in Centennial Center.

Enjoy a summer concert and cruise-in featuring 80z Nation, celebrating the sounds, style, and pop culture of the 1980s. Classic cars will line Main Street in front of the museum, setting the scene for an evening of nostalgia. Admission is free. Food trucks and sweet treats will be available.
