UPWA presents Summer Showdown 2026/Where it all began

UPWA’s 21st Anniversary Show, Summer Showdown 2026, brings pro wrestling back to Wilmington, North Carolina with a stacked card and championship stakes throughout the night. The main event features a 30 minute Iron Man Match for the Carolinas Championship as reigning titleholder Johnny Smooth meets top contender and former champion Victor Andrews. Smooth has ruled the division since capturing the belt at New Years Massacre 2025, while Andrews returned with Team UPWA at Wargames last year and owns a count out and a disqualification victory over Smooth, results that kept the title in the champion’s hands. To settle it, UPWA has set the Iron Man stipulation. After 30 minutes, the competitor with the most falls will leave as Carolinas Champion. Tag Team gold is also on the line in a Fatal Four Way. The Silk City Kings defend against The Royal Wave, The Coastal Collective, and Team Pitbull. UPWA Heavyweight Champion Sasha Jenkins issues an open challenge to any former UPWA champion, and UPWA owner Donald Brower is set to face Jake Logan. Also appearing are Lightweight Champion Joseph Everhart, Bobby Wohlfert, and other UPWA superstars. Tickets cost $20 at the door, with children admitted for $10.

The Connecticut quartet features Jake Brownstein on guitar and vocals, Dani Battat on keys and vocals, Mike Goodman on bass and vocals, and Alex Bailey on drums and vocals. Momentum carried through 2025 with intensive touring, a growing festival presence, and sold-out back-to-back Halloween shows at Cervantes in Denver celebrating The Ballad of Blucifer. Looking ahead, the band enters 2026 with confidence and creative drive, continuing to headline while planning to begin new music in early 2026. Admission is free for adult members, $5 for adult non-members, and $10 per child, with children under 2 admitted free. EBT card holders receive free entry. Wilmington World War II History Tour

Explore how Wilmington earned recognition as the nation’s first World War II Heritage City, a distinction tied to its pivotal role in the war and the care taken to preserve its historic sites. The tour traces the city’s transformation into a center for shipbuilding, chemical production, and other wartime industries, a surge that led many to describe it as a wartime boomtown. Hear about the downtown quarters that housed soldiers and sailors before they departed overseas, and learn about accounts suggesting the city’s significance even drew the only instance of German bombardment on the U.S. mainland. This heritage experience brings together homefront stories and notable locations to illuminate Wilmington’s outsized place in World War II history.

Seasonal Element Yin

This pop-up class offers a counterbalance to fast paced, always moving routines by emphasizing stillness, reflection, rest, and relaxation. Over 75 minutes, participants move through a yin yoga sequence that focuses on the body’s deeper layers, including connective tissues such as fascia and the joints. The shapes are inspired by the season as described in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the sequence includes conversation about the featured element and its related emotions, patterns in nature, associated organs, and other key qualities. Yin Yoga shares the broader goals of yoga while directing attention beyond the superficial muscles to ligaments, bones, and joints that receive less work in more active practices. It commonly centers on the hips, pelvis, and lower spine. All poses are practiced on the mat with no standing positions, and each posture is typically held for 3 to 7 minutes, relying on gravity rather than muscular effort. The approach may feel gentle yet can be challenging because of the prolonged holds. Open to all levels, with no prior yin experience needed. Cost: $25.

Saltwater Stories Series

An intimate evening at Voyce features an immersive blend of dining and storytelling created by WilmingtoNColor Heritage Tours and Voyce. This edition spotlights Shell Island, the historic Black beach resort community at Wrightsville Beach, sharing stories of freedom, entrepreneurship, joy, and cultural gathering that flourished during segregation and later faded from mainstream narratives. The experience pairs refined Coastal Carolina cuisine with vivid, place-centered storytelling to illuminate the region’s Black beach heritage. Voyce, a Black-owned restaurant led by two-time James Beard Award nominee and Top Chef alum Chef Keith Rhodes, hosts the event. After an initial sellout, the concept expanded into a monthly series so more people can take part while keeping the setting intentionally small. I WAS HERE: The Wrightsville Beach Museum Mailbox at Shell Island

At Seapath Yacht Club in Wrightsville Beach, a multi-model interactive installation shares print and digital works shaped by the letters, notes, and artifacts left in the Wrightsville Beach Museum Mailbox at Shell Island. These messages reach across grief and humor, hope and gratitude, with pages addressed to loved ones and to the universe, often blending many emotions in a single entry. Placed at the north end of the island in 2003, the mailbox welcomes personal reflections that are gathered into journals, then preserved and displayed by the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History. It creates a conversation that moves through time, while the museum safeguards the community’s photos and stories from residents, visitors, and those who feel in between, making the mailbox a living monument to shared memory. A featured component connects this ongoing practice to deeper history through UNCW MA Public History Practica: Shell Island Legacy, Connecting Past to Present. Shell Island Beach holds a significant place in the history of Black leisure along the Carolina coast within a segregated, tourism-driven economy. Between 1917 and 1926, plans envisioned a counterpart to Wrightsville Beach, referred to as a “mirror of Wrightsville Beach” or “National Negro Playground,” on what was then a separate island. The resort operated for only three summers from 1923 to 1926, yet it remains a vital marker in the story of Black tourism in the area. The exhibition includes a project that centers the emotional work of archiving and linking memory to place, acknowledging how the mailbox has become a kind of sacred space for complex feelings that have not always been tied to the site’s past.

Italia in Three Acts — Wilmington Summer Wine Dinner Series Act III · Marchesi Antinori — The Legacy

Act III, The Legacy Dinner, spotlights Marchesi Antinori and the landmark wine Tignanello. Antinori has crafted wine in Tuscany since 1385, and in 1971 introduced Tignanello, a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet aged in French oak and released without the customary appellation. That bold step reshaped Italian wine and helped give rise to the term Super Tuscan. This finale presents the most polished service of the three part series with five courses that build from a delicate opener to a dry aged steak paired with Tignanello. A chocolate dessert closes the meal, with an optional Brunello available for an extended finish. The price is $215 per seat, and the dinner is designed around a single pour of Tignanello within the five course experience.
