    West African Drum and/or Dance Class

    West African drum and dance take center stage at South Wedge Mission with master performer and teacher Mohamed Diaby, sharing the energetic rhythms of Guinea. The format includes separate drumming and dancing sessions, and beginners are encouraged to take part. Pricing is $15 for the drum class, $20 for the dance class, or $30 to do both. Drummers who attend the drum class may remain to play for the dance portion for an additional $5. Payment is accepted in cash or via Venmo at @Diaby. Diaby began playing jembe at a young age under the guidance of his brother Moustapha, later joining Africa Djole and touring widely as lead drummer for Les Merveilles de Guinea, including an extended period in Sierra Leone. He received encouragement from Mamady Keita and praise from Kemoko Sano of Les Ballet Africains. His work in the United States has included a performance at New York City’s Symphony Space, directing the Guinea style troupe Africa Sogaye in Atlanta, and organizing the WAH WAH Drum and Dance Conference. He continues to teach and tour across the United States, Canada, and Europe, promoting the music and culture of Guinea.
