2334 Lockport Rd, Sanborn · verified Sep 27
    See details

Rising costs and unexpected bills can strain any household budget. Meals of Hope offers a welcoming grocery selection to help individuals and families stretch food dollars during financially stressful times. Shoppers choose from pantry staples along with a rotating mix of refrigerated and frozen items donated by local grocery stores and restaurants. Quantities are based on household size, and to share resources widely the program asks households to limit visits to twice per month while donations remain limited. First-time visitors complete a brief intake form, and no proof of income is required. The program serves residents of Niagara County and the City of Tonawanda, and anyone who needs food will be assisted. Remember to bring reusable bags. Friendly volunteers are available to help select items, bag groceries, and carry them to your vehicle. The Hope Closet clothing program will also be open during this event, so both services can be visited in one trip. Meals of Hope is a community outreach program of The Gathering Place Project.

    Soumaya MaRose & Jill Parker

Elmwood Commons, 3200 Elmwood Ave, Buffalo · verified Sep 27
    See details

A weekend in Buffalo spotlights Moroccan dance, raqs sharqi, and fusion with featured artists Soumaya MaRose and Jill Parker, curated by Samana and Kenzie. The program begins with an intimate choreography intensive led by Jill, limited to fifteen dancers who prepare in advance online and then meet for an in-person rehearsal. The piece is set to Ismaaouni in a folkloric instrumental rendition by Musicians of the Nile, rich with mizmar, rebab, and tabla, and will be performed as a group with Jill during the Saturday evening gala. Soumaya also offers an introduction to Moroccan dance and culture that surveys four traditional forms, key techniques, and the historical and socioeconomic influences that shape this diverse tradition. Saturday builds technical range and artistry with Jill through work that honors folkloric and belly dance foundations while sharpening precision, efficient mechanics, muscular awareness, articulate isolations, expressive presence, musicality, and dynamic control. Later, Soumaya leads a rhythm-focused session on darbuka that explores traditional interpretation, cultural context and settings, emphasizes intricate pelvic movement, and looks beyond Westernized framing of the style. The day culminates in a gala at Elmwood Commons Theater featuring both headliners. Sunday starts with a light brunch and conversation before the last workshops. Soumaya guides a session on the ritual of henna, centering the Citadin North Moroccan ceremony and its symbolism while drawing comparisons to Amazigh roots, music, and dance. Jill closes the weekend with a slinky fusion intensive that uses minimal, refined motion to access internal power, focusing on heart lift, clear framing, breath, and movement sourced close to the spine. Slow, fluid drills, spinal articulation, grounded traveling, seamless transitions, and contrast work support a more magnetic, serpentine quality. All workshops take place at Elmwood Commons. Pricing includes a full pass with an early bird price of $365 and $399 after the early bird, which covers all workshops and brunch but not the performance intensive. A Saturday and Sunday pass offers an early bird price of $315 and $335 after the early bird, covering those workshops, brunch, and the evening gala. The choreography intensive is a $150 add-on and requires purchase of the full weekend pass. Gala tickets are $20. BIPOC and MENAHT dancers can access discounted workshop rates with the code BIPOCMENAHT. Refunds are offered only if the hosts cancel, and spots may be transferred by arranging with Kenzie.
