Washington & Greene Counties Covered Bridge Festival

Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village, 401 Meadowcroft Rd, Avella · verified Sep 13
    Free

Enjoy Washington and Greene Counties’ Annual Covered Bridge Festival with a free visit to Meadowcroft. Walk the Pine Bank Covered Bridge, built in 1871, which originally spanned Tom’s Run in the village of Pine Bank in Greene County. Saved from demolition in 1961 by Meadowcroft founder Albert Miller and moved nearly 70 miles to its current setting, the bridge now serves pedestrians and highlights the craftsmanship of the 19th century. A significant rehabilitation in 2017 preserved its structure and charm at a time when the United States has fewer than 700 of the more than 10,000 covered bridges that once stood. During the festival, admission to the bridge and Meadowcroft’s historic villages is free. Tours of the Rockshelter are available for $5 per person. Please note that the Pine Bank Covered Bridge is open to pedestrians only and does not permit vehicles.

Washington & Greene Counties Covered Bridge Festival

Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village, 401 Meadowcroft Rd, Avella · verified Sep 13
    Free

Meadowcroft opens its grounds for Washington and Greene Counties’ Annual Covered Bridge Festival, highlighting the historic Pine Bank Covered Bridge. Built in 1871, the bridge originally crossed Tom’s Run in the village of Pine Bank in Greene County, Pennsylvania. Facing demolition in 1961, it was saved by Meadowcroft founder Albert Miller and relocated nearly 70 miles to its current setting. Now a restored pedestrian crossing that underwent major rehabilitation in 2017, it offers a close look at the craftsmanship and history of Western Pennsylvania. When it was constructed, more than 10,000 covered bridges stood across the United States, and today fewer than 700 remain, which makes this a rare example of 19th century engineering. The bridge is open to pedestrians only, and vehicles are not permitted. During the festival, access to the Pine Bank Covered Bridge and Meadowcroft’s historic villages is free, and tours of the Rockshelter are available for $5 per person.
