At Ohio County Library, the Sexual Assault Help Center is offering a free self defense class focused on personal safety and empowerment. The organization is dedicated to ending sexual violence, human trafficking, and stalking, and provides around-the-clock services for survivors, prevention education in the community, and free risk reduction programs such as its Empowered Self Defense workshops. This workshop lasts about two hours and is designed to help reduce the risk of harm. It starts with a 30 minute discussion that challenges common myths about how a typical harm doer behaves. Participants then explore Power and Control, examining the tools harm doers use to create vulnerable situations, followed by a look at how the brain responds in fear filled moments and practical ways to work through those reactions. The session then moves into hands-on practice with physical self protection techniques that can be applied by people of all abilities. The class is open to everyone with no limits on age, ability, or gender. Instructors will adapt activities for participants with movement-related disabilities. Comfortable clothing and water are recommended, and participants are encouraged to care for their own needs throughout the session.

Participants will meet with Conor Tompkins at the Midway/Bulger trailhead of the Panhandle Trail for an evening of birdwatching. In recent years this spot has produced sightings of Short-eared Owls and Northern Harriers around twilight. The path is paved with a gentle, consistent incline.
