Physicist Bob Neinast explores how Indigenous Peoples in the Newark Valley watched the sun and the moon, placing less emphasis on technical astronomy and more on the repeating patterns they observed that shaped the design and construction of the Newark Earthworks. Neinast’s involvement with the Earthworks began with the first Walk with the Ancients in 2009, a pilgrimage from Chillicothe to Newark that traced, as closely as possible, the route of the often discussed Great Hopewell Road. That journey sparked his ongoing study of the celestial phenomena connected to the flourishing of Hopewell culture nearly 2,000 years ago. The talk takes place at the Octagon Visitor Center. This hands-on workshop leads you through each stage so you can finish an 8 by 10 painting to take home. All materials for the 8 by 10 project are included. LAPP’s Annual Evening of Giving at Elks Lodge brings the community together to support compassionate behavioral health care in Licking County. For 56 years, LAPP has supported individuals and families while partnering with local organizations to address barriers such as food insecurity and unemployment. With more than 46 million Americans affected by substance use and nearly one in five living with a mental illness, the evening recognizes both the progress made and the urgent needs that remain. Funds raised through ticket purchases and bidding directly sustain counseling, case management, and treatment for people who might not otherwise receive care. The focus is on community as a vital part of healing, with every act of generosity helping maintain essential lifelines.
