    Reality Fractured Commander League

The Eldritch Bastion, 1010 Hedstrom Dr, Ashland · verified Oct 9
    See details

Celebrate Reality Fracture with a themed Magic: The Gathering Commander league built around a Parallel Reality twist. Every deck may pair two commanders as long as both represent the same character within the Magic universe, letting players team up different printings or incarnations of a legend. Think along the lines of alternate versions of Kaalia or Gisa, Tinybones variants, or lore-linked identities such as Akroma with Jeska or Urza with the Blind Seer. Universes Beyond commanders are not permitted, though those cards can still appear in the 99, and this includes no exceptions for Lord of the Rings or Dungeons and Dragons. Each chosen card must be able to serve as a commander on its own. Planeswalkers that explicitly allow themselves to be commanders are fine, and partner cards are acceptable when both depict the same character. For this season only, the usual EDHREC popularity cap is waived. A focused ban list applies to specific characters and lines, including Atraxa, the Praetors, the Eldrazi titans, Jodah, and any two color versions of Niv-Mizzet, while five color interpretations of Niv-Mizzet remain allowed. Deck construction follows a $100 budget that does not count the commanders or basic lands, encouraging inventive pairings without sacrificing the rest of the build. Play is aimed at a Bracket 2, casual and social power level. Avoid cards or strategies that dramatically swing the game, skip infinite two-card setups or turbo wins, do not chain extra turns, and leave mass land destruction out of the mix. Games should generally reach at least turn eight. Be considerate when building within this powerful theme, keep the table experience in mind, and remember that it is fine to decline a matchup or switch off your league deck if a pairing is not enjoyable. The season runs across eight consecutive weeks.

    Dexter Davis and more

Artists Archives of the Western Reserve, 1834 E 123rd St, Cleveland · verified Oct 11
    See details

The Artists Archives of the Western Reserve presents three concurrent exhibitions that recognize the inclusion of each artist’s work in the Archives. Though distinct in voice, the shows share a postmodern lens, weaving appropriation, lived experience, and a conversation between fine art and popular culture. Dexter Davis, Body & Soul features predominantly works by the artist, joined by selections from the AAWR permanent collection and loans from Lawrence Waldman, Tony Serna, and Dolin / Maxwell. Davis embraces an expressive process, building collages that he relates to painting or drawing. Drawings and prints mingle with objects from daily life, creating fresh connections and imagery. David Batz, A Creative Odyssey is drawn entirely from the Archives’ collection. The presentation centers on ceramics, both sculptural and functional, alongside a few pieces made with natural materials. While the emphasis is on clay, Batz also produced art prints and explored studio papermaking. Extensive travels informed his imagery, and the collection on view includes many colorful impressed surfaces and brightly glazed works from the Odyssey series. Robert Wright, Civil Disobedience brings together pieces from the AAWR collection and additional works on loan from the artist. Wright’s practice is rooted in motion. As a deaf artist he studies ballet rehearsals, sketches dancers, then distills their movement into abstracted characters. Works in this series are predominantly oil on canvas. The title references a jazz project by New York bassist David Ambrosio, and Wright often paints to jazz, drawing parallels between today’s upheaval and the reflective music of the 1960s. An opening reception will take place in the AAWR galleries. Admission is free and open to the public.

    Sleeping Giant

The Liminis Theatre, 2438 Scranton Rd, Cleveland · verified Oct 13
    See details

After a fireworks-laden marriage proposal goes disastrously off script, the blasts awaken an ancient presence that has slept in a nearby lake for millennia. From there, the play unfolds in a sequence of close-up, darkly humorous, and occasionally startling vignettes that examine how far people will go when they are searching for something to believe in. First produced by Mark Giberson, Nathan Frizzell, Michael Matthews, and Christopher Sepulveda at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, it was commissioned by Theater Emory in Atlanta for the “4:48 Project” and further developed through Center Theatre Group’s L.A. Writers’ Workshop Festival. The premiere took place at Salt Lake Acting Company in Salt Lake City, followed by productions at Know Theatre in Cincinnati, Stray Cat Theatre in Phoenix, and Rorschach Theatre in Washington, DC.
