Building Community Beyond the Screen: How Local Facebook Groups Can Strengthen Cities

Metropolitan Library System (Midwest City Library), 8143 E Reno Ave, Oklahoma City · verified Aug 9
    See details

Carol Jane Thompson, founder of the I ❤️ Midwest City Facebook group, leads a conversation on how local online communities help neighbors connect and strengthen ties across the city. What started as a Facebook group has grown into a well known hub where residents trade local news, celebrate wins, support small businesses, ask for advice, organize community projects, and step up for one another in everyday situations and during harder times. She will share how the group began, what she has learned from growing and moderating a large online community, and practical ways digital spaces can spark meaningful action offline. The discussion looks at how constructive engagement can encourage volunteering, bolster local organizations, boost civic participation, and deepen a shared sense of community. Community leaders, business owners, nonprofit volunteers, and anyone who cares about the future of Midwest City can expect insights on using social media for connection, collaboration, and positive local impact.

Finished pieces will be ready for pickup three weeks after your class and will be held for up to 30 days. Attendance requires purchasing tickets in advance, and registering at least two hours ahead is recommended because walk-ins are typically not available. The class starts promptly. Class size is limited to five participants. Participants must be at least 14 years old, with a guardian-signed waiver required for anyone under 18. Wear clothes and shoes you do not mind getting muddy, and take precautions if you have cuts or abrasions on your hands. Plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to be ready when instruction begins.
