    Vienna Teng

Uptown Theater, Providence · verified Jul 31
    See details

Vienna Teng crafts songs that feel like intimate conversations that linger long after the last note. Her choral piece The Hymn of Acxiom has surfaced in media literacy courses, drum corps programs, David Byrne’s blog, and even pop-up choirs in public buildings. The buoyant urgency of Stray Italian Greyhound has fueled anime fan videos and dialogue across political lines. City Hall, with its Americana colors, has become a quiet beacon for queer coming-out stories. Level Up has cheered on dissertations, debut novels, and fights through illness, while Harbor often accompanies first dances and graduation milestones. Lullabye For A Stormy Night continues to tuck itself into bedtime routines, showing how these songs grow alongside listeners. Since her 2002 debut Waking Hour drew attention from NPR’s Weekend Edition, The Late Show with David Letterman, and Amazon’s charts, she has continually rebuilt the world around her warm mezzo voice. Albums like Warm Strangers, Dreaming Through the Noise, Inland Territory, and Aims trace a path from string-rich intimacy to quiet jazz textures to expansive ambition to luminous electronics. She has also written for the stage as composer of The Fourth Messenger, and echoes of adventurous craftsmen like Paul Simon and Tori Amos can be heard without mistaking her for anyone else. Beyond music, she pursued graduate studies and climate work with the University of Michigan’s Erb Institute, McKinsey’s sustainability practice, and the nonprofit Delterra, while growing her family. That chapter shaped her intricate 2024 project We’ve Got You, two companion songs designed to be played together or apart. In 2025, Grist recognized her among 50 climate innovators to watch for a music x action community that helps fans take concrete steps, from buying an e-bike to launching a green effort at work to advancing local clean energy rules. On the road she also leads venue-based workshops that many describe as transformative, energizing, and a welcome counterweight to despair, turning those quiet conversations into real-world momentum.
