A mainstay of modern blues, Benoit debuted in 1992 with the album Nice and Warm on the Justice label, whose title track earned strong AAA radio play and launched a touring schedule approaching 250 shows a year for more than two decades. After four releases with Justice, he moved to Vanguard, took on producing his own records, and issued These Blues Are All Mine in 1999. In 2002 he signed with Telarc and shifted to a trio format that broadened his guitar expressiveness while focusing his songwriting on Louisiana’s coastal land loss. His first release there, Wetlands, blended native Louisiana styles and translated accordion and washboard textures to the guitar, marking a pivotal step in his sound. In 2004 he founded the Voice of the Wetlands nonprofit and convened an all-star group that has included Cyril Neville, Anders Osborne, George Porter Jr, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Johnny Vidacovich, Johnny Sansone, and Waylon Thibodeaux, releasing two albums and appearing on the road periodically. He later co-founded Whiskey Bayou Records with Rueben Williams, releasing music by Eric McFadden, Damon Fowler, Eric Johanson, Jeff McCarty, and Dash Rip Rock, and in 2019 brought the Whiskey Bayou Revue to stages across the country.
