Memphis Listening Lab hosts music historian John Brackett for a celebration of his new book, Touch of Grey, or How the Grateful Dead Became Pop Stars. The book traces how a single track reshaped the band’s legacy, following Touch of Grey from Robert Hunter’s early lyrics and the group’s initial live versions to the surge in mainstream attention that accompanied the song and the album In the Dark in 1987. Drawing on extensive archival work, Brackett explores the recording technologies, musical traits, audience listening practices, and industry strategies that helped turn a cult favorite into a pop culture fixture, including the creation of a hit single, an eye catching video, and a coordinated promotional effort. Brackett is the author of John Zorn: Tradition and Transgression and Live Dead: The Grateful Dead, Live Recordings, and the Ideology of Liveness, and he brings deep research experience to this look at a pivotal moment in rock history.

The New Direction Community Garden at New Direction Christian Church has been brought to life by leaders, volunteers, and neighbors. Thanks to their teamwork, the garden is off to a strong start. Donations and support are still being accepted.

Enrollment is open for fall dance classes at Children’s Ballet Theater in East Memphis, with options in ballet, tap, musical theater, jazz, pointework, modern, and contemporary. The Orion Financial Free Concert Series brings a mix of local, national, and international performers to the historic Overton Park Shell, a stage with a long legacy of memorable shows. This edition spotlights Hattiloo Theatre with a concert experience that channels the feel of a Saturday night soul revue, blending gospel-infused vocals, R&B rhythms, Broadway numbers, and brief stage vignettes. The program celebrates the sound, spirit, and storytelling tradition of Black performance in the theatre’s signature style. Founded in 2006 by Ekundayo Bandele with leadership from board chair Michael de Caetani, Hattiloo Theatre is a 501(c)(3) named for Bandele’s daughters, Hatshepsut (Hatti) and Oluremi (Loo). It began in a small Edge District storefront and, in 2014, moved into a purpose-built home following a $4.3 million campaign, opening debt free and paired with a $500,000 endowment. A 2016 campaign added a Development Center, and that year an 8,000-square-foot former head start facility was transformed into the Hattiloo Technical Theatre Center through a $1-per-year lease with the City of Memphis. In 2017 the organization opened HattiHouse to host visiting artists and interns. As the only freestanding Black repertory theatre in the five surrounding states, Hattiloo reaches thousands annually with free programming across the city and is recognized nationwide as a valuable resource.
