Open water training takes place at Safe Harbor Pier 121 with the Playtri Open Water Club, a long-standing weekly program serving athletes from across the DFW area. Sessions depend on conditions. Swims may proceed in rain, but not when there is thunder, lightning, or wind deemed unsafe by coaching and lifeguard staff. Swims are held only when the water temperature reported by Texas Parks and Wildlife is above 56 degrees Fahrenheit. Two coached options are available, one focused on technique and another geared toward longer continuous swimming. Safety coverage includes a lifeguard and a watercraft at every session. Participants meet in the parking area east of the RV park. A high-visibility swim cap is required. Wetsuits are required when the water is below 60 degrees, with limited exceptions for those with extensive cold-water experience. Current Playtri athletes may attend at no cost, while non-Playtri athletes can drop in for a $10 cash fee, with electronic payments not accepted. Boats on hand include safari-rigged aluminum canoes known for stability, Kevlar standard tandems that are lighter and quicker, solo standards and unlimited canoes, stand up paddleboards, and surfskis. Questions are encouraged and the team will stay until everyone has had the chance to try what they want, at no cost. Stickers and NTX gear will be available, with food and drinks provided, creating a welcoming setting to gain confidence and discover a new sport.
