    Purple Flagging The Cemeteries

Comal Cemetery, 422 Peace Ave, New Braunfels · verified Sep 13
    Free

At Comal Cemetery, a community effort prepares for National Wreaths Across America Day by finding and marking every veteran’s grave across the Peace Avenue cemeteries. Because these are not national cemeteries and some headstones do not show military service, careful searching is needed so that no one is missed. Volunteers work in pairs with grid maps of known veteran sites, with one person navigating while the other places a purple flag at each grave. Purple is used because it is not a color used elsewhere in the cemeteries, which reduces confusion and makes veterans’ resting places easy to locate when wreaths are laid. The aim is to complete the work during the first weekend, with extra days held in reserve for bad weather or if more time is required. Arrival at the exact start is not necessary, and help is appreciated whether for a short visit or the whole morning. Students seeking volunteer or community service hours are welcome, and documentation for hours will be signed. The shared goal is to ensure every veteran is found, honored, and ready to receive a wreath.
