Blacksburg’s Market Square Jam spotlights Gina and Jason Dilg, Radford musicians not far from Lovely Mount in Southwest Virginia. They bring lively dance tunes and country ballads rooted in the American string band tradition, reflecting lives intertwined with performance, dance, art, and teaching. Gina grew up in a musical family and has been immersed in Southern Appalachian music since childhood. She performs and dances, works as a graphic artist, and teaches fiddle and flatfooting. Jason is known for his interpretations of Appalachian dance tunes and ballads. A versatile multi-instrumentalist with numerous competition honors, he previously taught banjo as an adjunct at Naropa University and now serves as instructor and director of the Junior Appalachian Musicians program in Montgomery County, Virginia. Together they were featured in the PBS docuseries "Life in Virginia’s Appalachia: Flatfooting." As a Crooked Road-affiliated venue, the Market Square Jam at Market Square Park focuses on traditional Old Time music, bringing musicians together to trade tunes and share good times with friends and family.

Set at Bollo’s Cafe & Bakery, the 20th edition of Andrew Gold features a handicap road race that began in 2007 as a warm-up for the Owen Cup, traditionally held the preceding weekend. The format sends the slowest cyclists off first and the fastest last so the finish comes together closely. Borrowed from Blacksburg’s Wednesday Worlds, this approach helps newer riders gain experience in a larger group while letting them learn from more seasoned racers. The ride leaves town parade style on the usual Wednesday Worlds route at an easy pace with no attacking. It rolls down Draper, turns right on Airport Rd, crosses S Main St onto Ellet Rd, descends Cedar Run to Luster’s Gate Road, then continues to the corner of Harding Rd. There, a safety review leads into the handicap start and open racing begins. Handicap intervals include a 15 minute head start for C and D men and for B and C women, a 5 minute head start for Men B and Women A, with A men chasing. The course starts at Luster’s Gate Rd and Harding Rd, continues along Catawba Rd, Sandy Ridge Rd, Newport Rd, VA Route 311, Blacksburg Rd, Gravel Hill Rd, Mt Tabor Rd, back onto Sandy Ridge Rd, then Blacksburg Rd again, turns onto Dry Run Rd, and returns via Mt Tabor Rd to finish at the green Blacksburg Corporate Limit sign. The route covers 46.8 miles. The road is open to traffic, so keep heads up, avoid crossing or crowding the yellow line, use caution at all turns, and take special care at the single stop sign on Mt Tabor. The route is mapped on Strava, and the spirit of the day is to keep it fun.

Now in its 18th year, this fall classic gathers the Virginia Tech road team to sort spring race categories while sharing the roads with alumni, Blacksburg area riders, and a few visiting guests. It is designed to help newer racers connect with the community, practice tactics and etiquette, and see who is preparing seriously for the collegiate season ahead. The format uses staggered starts so developing groups roll out first and faster riders set off later to chase, aiming to bring everyone to the line close together through smart teamwork and pacing. The day begins with a calm, controlled roll out from Bollo’s Cafe & Bakery before instructions are given and the handicap groups are released near the intersection of Harding Road and Lusters Gate, after which open racing begins. The route mixes technical riding with fitness tests, including gravel on Dry Run and a gravel climb on Gallion Ridge, multiple descents along Sandy Ridge, repeated trips on Blacksburg Road, and a final ascent of Cedar Run that tops out at the green Blacksburg corporate limit sign. Riders should remember that the course is on open roads, keep heads up, respect the yellow centerline, take extra care through turns, and watch for the single stop sign on Mount Tabor. Riders convene at Bollo's Cafe & Bakery for a calm roll out of town, then regroup at Slusser's Chapel for instructions and a staggered start that aims to keep the finish tight. The handicap format sends the slowest off first and the fastest last, and USA Cycling Pro, 1, 2, 3 and equivalent categories concede a five minute head start to the rest of the field. Newer riders gain valuable group experience, and professionals or top category racers who believe they merit an allowance may apply for a head start that will be put to a rider vote. From the chapel, the course unfolds on Mt. Tabor Road before turning across Sandy Ridge and Blacksburg Road, with the run to the line at the top of Harding Avenue. The final approach is signposted by the green Blacksburg Corporate Limit sign on Harding Road 200 meters before the finish, and the route to the line continues straight on Harding rather than turning right onto Happy Hollow. Category C completes one lap of this loop. Category B covers two laps that add Happy Hollow Road and a return over Mt. Tabor. Category A tackles three laps that repeat the full circuit, and only the A race can add a name to the Owen Cup. Riders may complete additional laps if they wish. All riding takes place on open roads, so stay alert, keep clear of the yellow line, use care in the turns and at the stop on Mt. Tabor, and help keep the day focused on safe, spirited racing.
