    Swing Dance Every Wednesday

    Valiant Ballroom, 109 W 9th St, Vancouver · verified Oct 9
    See details

This weekly swing dance at the Valiant Ballroom in downtown Vancouver, Washington features an intermediate lesson followed by a beginner lesson, then a social dance. Each lesson is $10 and includes the social, the social on its own is $5, and members receive both the lesson and the social at no cost. Instruction follows a repeating two‑month program. For beginners, each month progresses through core topics in order, starting with 6‑count Lindy Hop fundamentals that build footwork, simple turns, and rhythm, moving to partnered Charleston basics with entries, exits, and variations, then 8‑count Lindy Hop foundations, and an introduction to swing‑outs with attention to footwork, timing, and body mechanics, with an introduction to the Shim Sham line dance when there is a fifth week. The intermediate track alternates by month. In the first month, the focus moves from closed‑position connection and pulse to turn preparation and rotation, then fast‑tempo dancing, and swing‑out refinement, with fancy footwork added on a fifth week. In the second month, the emphasis shifts to open‑position connection with push pull and lateral work, to momentum and direction both laterally and rotationally, to distinguishing 6‑count from 8‑count patterns, back to swing‑out refinement, and again fancy footwork on a fifth week. Lesson depth adapts to the group, requests are welcome at the end of class, and feedback on the material is encouraged.

Nocturnal Worlds: Sleep, Dreams, Insomnia, & Memory

The Kiggins Theatre, 1011 Main St, Vancouver
    See details

At The Kiggins Theatre, Nocturnal Worlds explores what the brain is doing while we sleep, from the synchronized rhythms of deep rest to the lively REM cycles that resemble wakefulness even as the body stays still. Artist Kindra Crick has spent years investigating the ties between sleep and memory. In 2024 she began wearing a portable EEG each night and keeping a detailed dream and sleep journal, while collaborating with researchers studying circadian timing, the claustrum’s role in coordinating slow waves, and a sleep physician focused on midlife sleep disruption. Drawing on this work, Crick presents figurative paintings shaped by her own sleep data, illuminating deep sleep, REM, and bouts of insomnia. The event invites a fresh look at the hidden nighttime processes that help memories form, shares perspectives on why some scientists compare REM to therapy that happens during sleep, and offers a few practical ideas for calming a 3 a.m. thought loop. Crick creates at the intersection of art and neuroscience, with work held in public collections including the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, Princeton University, and the Jordan Schnitzer Collection, and she is based in Portland with artwork on view at Waterstone Gallery.

The Lavender Palette includes essays and profiles of thirteen artists and considers how they navigated identity and career while enriching the state’s artistic life. Martin serves as Curator for the Cascadia Art Museum and is recognized for extensive scholarship on historically underrepresented artists active between 1880 and 1970, along with numerous publications and lectures in the United States and Europe. His honors include an honorary doctorate from Cornish College of the Arts and the Pacific Northwest Historians Guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Admission is free.
