An Evening With Geordie Greep at Revolution Hall

    1300 SE Stark St, Portland
    See details

Geordie Greep steps out from black midi with The New Sound, his first solo release, embracing the idea that music can be anything and savoring the freedom of working without guardrails. Crafted with the contributions of more than thirty session musicians on two continents, including whirlwind dates in Brazil with local players tracked in a day or two, the album delivers an all-embracing strain of alternative pop that balances the outlandish with exacting craft. Echoes of Frank Zappa, Frank Sinatra and Scott Walker ripple through the music. The instrumental title track bursts with jazz funk verve, fueled by brass, wah wah textures, bass punches, layered choruses and quick-stepping polyrhythms. Songs swing from hush to clamor and love to ignite at the start and finish. The stories unfold as theatrical vignettes with Greep as a kind of master of ceremonies, circling a theme of desperation as characters bluff control and then unravel, amid scenes that wander through cafes, bars, rented rooms, cabarets and curious museums. Holy Holy floats a nightclub fantasy on early 2000s indie colors and swaggering Latin big band flourishes, even calling for three pianos. Ever restless, Greep talks about convening new groups in new places so the results never land the same way twice.

Revolution Hall, 1300 SE Stark St, Portland · verified Oct 2
    See details

The Milk Carton Kids bring their Fall Tour to Revolution Hall with Paper Wings, highlighting the duo’s close harmonies and intricate acoustic interplay. Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan first drew attention in 2011 with two voices and two guitars, favoring precision and unity over volume, a hallmark that continues to shape their sound. Their seventh studio album, Lost Cause Lover Fool on Far Cry/Thirty Tigers, features nine songs that invite listeners to lean in, with roots-leaning arrangements and a deep trust in space. Over the years they have moved from early buzz to hosting a major roots music awards show in Nashville, earning four Grammy nominations and placing songs in projects like Promised Land and the comedy series Girls 5Eva. They founded Sad Songs Summer Camp to help songwriters dig deeper and launched the Los Angeles Folk Festival to spotlight musicians and comedians from across the Folk community. This performance centers the quiet details and connection that define their music, presented onstage at Revolution Hall with Paper Wings.

SOUL'D OUT PRESENTS: FRUIT BATS w/ MATTHEW LOGAN VASQUEZ

Crystal Ballroom, 1332 W Burnside St, Portland
    See details

Fruit Bats perform at Crystal Ballroom in Portland with Matthew Logan Vasquez. Guided by Eric D. Johnson, the project channels Midwestern horizons into songs that weigh the past and look ahead, a spirit captured on The Landfill, the Merge Records album that turns personal history into a towering landscape. Inspired by the immediacy of Johnson’s solo Baby Man sessions, the full-band sound was recorded largely live with minimal overdubs and shaped alongside longtime collaborator Thom Monahan. Across tracks like The Landfill, That Goddamn Sun, Think Aboutcha, and Perhaps We’re a Storm, tender vulnerability meets a lift of guitars, keys, and rhythm, shifting between exuberance and reflection. Built with bandmates David Dawda, Josh Mease, Frank LoCrasto, and Kosta Galanopoulos, Fruit Bats have become a sought presence in indie rock. This appearance brings that chemistry to the Crystal Ballroom stage, pairing intimate storytelling with a vivid in-the-moment feel, with Matthew Logan Vasquez sharing the bill.

Rather than looking back, the project offers fresh interpretations, with guitarist Todd Nichols describing how electric parts were thoughtfully reshaped for acoustic guitar so each piece feels right in its new form. The album has drawn praise from outlets like Ink 19 and Glide Magazine for both the strength of the songwriting and Glen Phillips’ enduring vocals, underscoring how these tunes resonate in any setting. On stage, that spirit becomes Rings: The Acoustic Tour, a close-up celebration of four decades of music that has meant so much to fans. Glen Phillips points to the way music can help you gather yourself and reconnect when life feels isolating. This event is all ages.

Holocene, 1001 SE Morrison St, Portland · verified Oct 4
    See details

Part of The Three Wishes Tour, this Portland show brings together Amélie Farren, Lilith Max, and Rabbitology for a showcase of narrative-driven music. Amélie crafts alt-folk and alt-pop that captures vivid, close-up moments; her releases range from the widely streamed suffering and Unsweetened Lemonade to the album Airheaded, produced by Michael Keenan in Los Angeles, and the EP Infanescence, which reflects on how time reshapes a person. Lilith Max blends fantasy folk with tales of knights, myths, and magic, drawing on German folklore and pairing dance-ready rhythms with lyrics that confront themes such as female rage, social pressure, climate change, and inner struggle. With a background in acting, her performances carry a cinematic flair, full of motion and shifting intensity. Rabbitology, the project of Nat Timmerman, invites listeners into an eccentric sonic world where personal memoir becomes fantastical short stories and eclectic textures lead the way. Together, these artists create an imaginative journey centered on storytelling, emotion, and atmosphere.

    WombSong

SaunaGlo, 1915 SE Jefferson St, Portland · verified Oct 2
    See details

For those longing for ritual and shared sacred space, this intimate song circle gathers a small community around the fire to practice an ancient tradition of exchanging songs that uplift those who connect with the Mother archetype, the aspect that nurtures, cradles, creates, and remembers. The experience weaves heat and cold as ritual allies, with optional movement between sauna and cold water. Inside the sauna, guided self-massage helps soften the body, followed by embodied vocal toning to awaken the voice. Simple call and response songs invite everyone in, with time for reflection and sharing, and no prior singing experience needed. The focus is authenticity over performance, inviting participants to remember the body and voice as vessels for care, connection, and creation. Singing together becomes a way to tend the inner Mother and welcome the sacred through shared sound. Every voice is welcomed as a gift. Attendance is limited to an intimate group of 12 women and the cost is $25 per person. The gathering is open to anyone who identifies with the mother archetype in any way, including mothers of living or nonliving children and those who mother nonhuman beings. Arriving with time to settle is encouraged, and the sauna and cold plunge may be enjoyed before the space closes to the public and the circle begins. Please plan to enter the sauna clean and dry, without oils or lotions, to support self-massage. A robe, two towels, and sandals are recommended. While the gathering is guided, participation is always by choice, and the circle holds room for open sharing, open hearts, and compassionate witnessing without attempting to fix or change another’s experience.

Bramaviharas: Divine Abodes of the Heart, 7-day Retreat

Cloud Mountain Retreat Center, 373 Agren Rd, Castle Rock
    See details

At Cloud Mountain Retreat Center, this seven-day retreat with Tina offers a comprehensive immersion in the Heart Practices of meditation. The focus is on the Bramaviharas, known in Theravadan and Tibetan Buddhist traditions as the heart’s divine abodes: metta, karuna, mudita, and upekkha. Presented as a unified curriculum rather than as separate techniques, these trainings offer a clear way to relate to the human condition and to meet whatever arises with an open, unhindered heart. The program also includes a forgiveness practice that Tina regards as a fifth Bramavihara, a gratitude practice, and guidance on Divine Love, described as a nondual facet of our deeper nature toward which these methods point. Emphasis is placed on the depth and rigor of these approaches, on par with Focused Attention, Open Monitoring, and Self-Transcending work. Framed as practices that purify the heart, they engage consciousness in a unique way, helping to process universal personality material that can impede spiritual growth, and they offer steadiness in challenging times for individuals and communities.

Their bumpy rehearsals stir up old scars and new courage, and along the way they find their voices, their strength, and the friendship that binds them. This holiday musical blends fresh country twang with familiar seasonal songs and plenty of Southern charm, celebrating community and the chosen families that help people find their way when they feel a bit lost. With a book by Allyson Currin, music by Matt Conner, and lyrics by Stephen Gregory Smith, based on an idea from Cathy Alter and Sandra Johnson. Performances take place at Broadway Rose New Stage. Title Sponsor: Harvey and Sandy Platt. Show Sponsor: CTA Pathology.

Angine de Poitrine at Crystal Ballroom

805 SE Sherman St, Portland · verified Oct 4
    See details

Angine de Poitrine brings a kinetic strain of rock to Crystal Ballroom in Portland, built on asymmetric rhythms, adventurous harmonies, and a driving pulse that sparks movement. Tight, propulsive drumming locks in with webs of double neck microtonal guitar, shaping trance-like spirals of sound and imagery. Since releasing Vol. 1 in 2024, the duo’s momentum has accelerated with attention from audiences, critics, and industry figures, highlighted by appearances at major festivals in Quebec such as the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, and with eyes toward Trans Musicales in Rennes. The follow up, Vol. 2, keeps the energy brisk while sidestepping straightforward repetition. It leans into sharper, more dynamic structures, hides playful details for careful listeners, and draws power from acid techno, disco, and rock. Mata Zyklek races ahead on a resonant fifth and urgent tempo, whipping through quick turns like a tongue in cheek action chase capped by a dirtbike escape. Guided by space time travelers Klek and Khn de Poitrine, the performance nods to hot dogs, pyramids, and rock’s over the top spectacle. At the core, it is all about playing rock and roll.
