FDLRC Youth Running Series
A free four-week youth cross country series invites students entering grade 8 or below to run at Theisen Middle School. The event is open to the public, and students from any school district, including those outside the area, are welcome no matter what sports they play during the school year. Race-day registration is the only signup and it covers all weeks. Returning runners should check in before their race each week. The registration area is set up on the east side of the building near the east parking lot, and if weather moves in it will be relocated just inside door number 9 by that lot. Races are grouped by grade and distance: Pre-K and Kindergarten run 1/8 mile, grades 1 through 3 run 1/4 mile, grades 4 through 6 run 1/2 mile, and grades 7 and 8 run 3/4 mile. All courses are on grass on the east side of Theisen and loop around the football field, with the start and finish close to the east parking lot. Volunteers will be on course to help guide participants. Every runner receives a participant award each week. All finishers are timed and will receive a place card at the line, which must be turned in at registration so results can be recorded. Water will be available for both participants and spectators.

Explore a two-week ceramics course that guides you through creating a handbuilt vessel finished with the traditional horsehair firing method. After firing, strands of horsehair fuse to the surface and leave distinctive, one-of-a-kind markings. No prior clay experience is needed. The first class focuses on building your form by hand. The second covers post-firing horsehair application and final finishing. Each session runs two hours. The fee is $80, with a 20 percent discount for members. Open to ages 16 and up, with participants under 18 attending with a parent. Instruction is led by Pat Reiher, an artist and educator with a Fine Arts degree from UW-O who spent 33 years leading the St. Mary’s Springs art department. Her experience includes teaching at the university level, launching adult and youth art programs, and leading residencies and community workshops. Her recognitions include the Kohl Fellowship Award for Achievement in Education, Optimist Educator of the Year, the Windhover Center of the Arts “Windy” Award for furthering the arts in the community, and the National DAR Distinguished Women in the Arts Award. She has been active in numerous arts organizations, has organized and chaired exhibitions and programs, and has exhibited paintings, ceramics, and jewelry nationally in galleries and private collections. Her studio work continues to explore metals and ceramics, emphasizing the interplay of form, space, color, and texture.

Weekly summer track workouts at Cardinal Stadium in Fond du Lac welcome all ages and paces for structured intervals totaling about three miles on the track. Sessions begin with brief announcements and an outline of the plan, then participants often sort into faster and slower groups based on recovery times. Repeats typically range from 100 to 1600 meters, with most weeks focusing on 400 to 1600 meter efforts. Participation is flexible, so complete what feels right and there is no requirement to run the full distance. Non-members are welcome, and the gatherings are free and open to the public, with a friendly turnout that often ranges from 15 to 30 people. The venue offers plenty of parking and access to restrooms. Bringing your own water and snacks is recommended, along with weather-appropriate gear and a dry change of clothes. In poor weather, a running club representative will still be at the track, though attendees are encouraged to use their judgment, especially if traveling from out of town. First-time participants will be asked to sign a waiver that covers the spring and summer season. There is usually time to warm up beforehand, and the specific workout changes each week while adding up to roughly three miles.

Theisen Middle SchoolIsthmus Brass
Isthmus Brass unites top professional brass musicians from across the Midwest to form Wisconsin’s leading large brass ensemble. Founded in Madison in 2009 by accomplished players from southern Wisconsin who wanted to collaborate, the group began by presenting charitable Christmas concerts benefiting Porchlight, Inc., a tradition that has raised more than $150,000 over the years. Their work has reached international audiences with a Summit Records release titled Isthmus Brass Christmas and a second holiday album, We Need a Little Christmas, and they perform year-round on concert series throughout the Midwest with programs that span many styles. This free concert offers a wide-ranging program that includes de Abreu’s Tico Tico, Sousa’s El Capitan, Strauss’s Fanfare Stadt Wien, and Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, providing variety for all listeners. Food concessions will not be available. If weather requires a change, the performance will move to the County Fairgrounds. Support for this appearance is provided by Steve and Lynne Uecker, in memory of their daughter Lauren Katharine Uecker, along with John and Sandy Wright and Dr. Steven Meress.

The first annual memorial golf outing in honor of Thomas J. Diener takes place at Rolling Meadows Golf Course and celebrates a life dedicated to service as a firefighter and paramedic, a lieutenant, and a business owner known for his passion for sirens. The event features a four-person scramble with a shotgun start so all teams begin play from assigned holes at the same time. Participants will have an opportunity to check in, warm up, and pick up any event materials before heading out on the course. Proceeds support the Thomas J. Diener Memorial Scholarship Fund through the Professional Firefighters of Wisconsin Charitable Foundation, helping students pursuing careers as firefighters, EMTs, or paramedics. In addition, organizers intend to back efforts that benefit the communities Thomas served. Ways to contribute include golfing at $100 per player or $400 per four-person team, sponsoring lunch, dinner, holes, or tees, and donating items for raffles. Raffle contributions may include sports memorabilia such as tickets, signed items, jerseys and apparel, hats, unique experiences like travel packages, weekend getaways, adventures, and hotel stays, gift cards or certificates of $50 or more, beer, liquor, and wine for baskets or prizes, and services such as massage certificates, gym passes, lawn care, and health care. A commemorative tee shirt is available by pre order. All donations are tax deductible and will be acknowledged at the event, supporting future emergency responders while honoring Thomas’s legacy and the communities he cared for.

Celebrate the release of Road Dog with a blues-driven performance from the Mark Hummel Band. Advance admission is $10 through Hometown Tickets, and entry is $15 at the door or on the day of the show. Led by Grammy-nominated harmonica player, singer, songwriter, bandleader, author, and impresario Mark Hummel, this event highlights a career that began in New Haven and took root in Los Angeles, where he picked up the blues harp in high school and followed the trail blazed by Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Little Walter. Early visits to the Ash Grove on Melrose introduced him to Charlie Musselwhite, Brownie McGhee with Sonny Terry, and James Cotton, artists he would later work with regularly. Since 1985 he has toured with the Blues Survivors and appeared on more than thirty recordings, including Remembering Little Walter, which received a Grammy nomination and earned two Blues Music Awards. His road tales are captured in the memoir Big Road Blues: 12 Bars on I-80, and recent studio work includes True Believer. Workouts vary from week to week and often include repeats between 100 and 1600 meters, with most falling in the 400 to 1600 range. Runners usually sort into two training groups based on recovery intervals, and no one is required to complete the full distance. All ages and experience levels are welcome. Restrooms and ample parking are available. Bring your own food and drink. If weather looks unfavorable, a representative will still be at the track, but please use your discretion, especially if traveling from out of town. Dress for the conditions and consider packing extra dry layers. First-time attendees will be asked to sign a waiver that covers the season. Typical turnout ranges from about 15 to 30 people, sometimes more.

The group hails from Milwaukee and is led by keyboardist and composer Glenn McCormick, with guitarist Connor Peck, bassist John Julka, and the rhythm team of Keenan McAuliffe and Zach Hubert. Vocalist Pat Mullen adds fresh layers to their newer material. Early releases included the Discount and Liquidation EPs with Higher Education Records collaborators Moses Pelman and Godxilla, and Liquidation was recognized as a finalist for 88.9’s Best Disc We Missed. Studio highlights feature Frugal Stu on vocals for Closeout and a guest spot from Soul Low’s Sean Hirthe on saxophone for Cleanup on aisle J. Their first full-length, Chapter 7, widened the scope from psychedelic rock to bluegrass with adventurous time signatures, Latin-influenced percussion, vivid keys, and guitar work evoking Trey Anastasio of Phish while keeping memorable hooks at the core. Their latest four-song EP, Arcane, arrived in the summer of 2025 and showcases new vocal tracks from Mullen. Admission is a $10 cash cover at the door.
