Free events in Kanawha County, WV

At Kanawha State Forest Foundation, this Outdoor Classroom offers a free, hands-on learning experience that helps students and families explore wildlife and the natural world. The session features Julie Simmons, coordinator of the DEP Youth Environmental Program, who will share how youth across West Virginia can take part in community environmental projects. Established in 1963 under the Division of Natural Resources and sponsored by the DEP, the program connects groups such as 4-H clubs, scout troops, schools at every level, FFA chapters, church youth fellowships, and others around projects like litter cleanups, recycling drives, and tree plantings. Participating groups can earn incentives, with more than $15,000 in cash and other awards available, including a college scholarship. Enrollment is open year round at no cost and without obligation, and enrolled groups receive informational materials, lists of available awards and sponsors, project ideas, and guidance on reporting.
