Serving as an introduction to The Age of Anxiety: German Expressionism in Art and Film, the talk looks at paintings, prints, and film to show how artists responded to the upheaval surrounding World War I with imagination and innovation, turning the pressures of modern life into powerful and unsettling works. Presented in cooperation with the Institute for Cultural Exchange and the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau Foundation, the exhibition is generously presented by Anne and Merritt Dyke. Among the works associated with the exhibition is Otto Dix’s “Nebel am Abend (Fog in the Evening),” 1922, a watercolor and gouache on paper on loan from the collection in the Willy-Brandt-House, Berlin.
