Curator Talk: Gunnar Widforss–Master of the Inner Canyon
Alan Petersen presents a talk on the inner canyon paintings of Swedish-American artist Gunnar Widforss, widely known as the Painter of the National Parks. While Widforss created acclaimed views from the Grand Canyon rim, he also ventured deep into the canyon and spent weeks at Phantom Ranch capturing dramatic, lesser known landscapes. Working en plein air with remarkable skill, these inner canyon works reflect his adventurous spirit and deep love for the canyon and are among his finest. Petersen serves as the Fine Arts Curator at MNA and created the Gunnar Widforss Catalogue Raisonné, an online record of the artist’s drawings and paintings. The talk is included with museum admission and coincides with the Call of the Colorado Plateau exhibition.

A general ticket costs $5 and must be purchased in advance because seating is limited, while the Buy a Book option includes entry and guarantees a signed copy of the featured title. Books will also be sold at the event, and purchases made before publication day receive a 10 percent discount. The book follows Hall’s journey across more than two decades at the forefront of American distance running, spanning a national high school championship, standout collegiate years at Stanford, and a unique sweep of U.S. titles in both the mile and the marathon. It recounts records and milestones such as the American half marathon record and the fastest marathon in the United States by a woman aged 40 or older, along with appearances at multiple World Championships. Hall also explores the challenges behind the results, including fear of failure that began in high school, a results-centered culture through college and the pros, anxiety and imposter syndrome, and outside pressure to step back from competition to support her husband, Olympic marathoner Ryan Hall, and their children. She describes how faith, family, and a love of pushing her limits sustained her. After she and Ryan adopted four daughters from Ethiopia, she continued to improve, running new personal bests and earning podium finishes at many of the world’s most competitive races. The book offers an affectionate portrait of running and of her growth as an athlete, partner, and mother. Sara Hall has competed professionally for over twenty years, has been nationally ranked for nearly three decades, and lives in Flagstaff with her family.

Willow Bend Environmental Education CenterTransonic Communities Three-Day Workshop
Experience a three-day workshop that explores how sound links people and places, guided by ARTx keynote presenter Guillermo Galindo. Through attentive listening, voice exploration, and movement, participants practice sensing and shaping resonance together. The process builds toward a public sharing, where the textures created through collective interaction can be heard. Attendees can expect to leave more attuned to their acoustic surroundings, more confident in their own voice, and more aware of sound as a medium for human connection. Participation in all three sessions is expected so the experience can develop from start to finish. Galindo brings a wide-ranging practice to this work. Trained as a classical composer of symphonies and operas, he reimagines sound as a living, generative force informed by shamanic traditions, Mesoamerican cosmology, and animist perspectives. His art investigates the edges where one realm meets another, including geographic, political, psychological, biological, and gendered boundaries. A 2024 Guggenheim Fellow, his work resides in the collections of LACMA, the de Young, Crystal Bridges, and the National Gallery, and he teaches at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Projects such as Sonic Botany, Sonic Biogenesis, Genomics and Mutant Jungles, and Ruido Negro reflect his fusion of visual and sonic thinking, pairing graphic notation with interactive soundscapes and examining thresholds between species, the organic and the synthetic, and the persistence of the human presence on the planet.
