Layered topographical drawings of Tséyiʼ, also known as Canyon de Chelly, and Valles Marineris on Mars accompany the installation, connecting canyons across planets and compressing notions of time and space. A longtime pillar of San Francisco’s Latin jazz community for roughly five decades, Calloway has led his own groups, collaborated with John Santos, and directed the Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble of San Francisco. Launched in 2022, the Afro-Filipino Jazz Project is a collaborative space where Afro Filipinx, African American, and Filipino American musicians explore a wide spectrum of styles with a focus on jazz traditions, African American musical roots, and traditional and folkloric Filipino sounds. It is part of the broader Afro-Filipino Project, which highlights the creative practices and artists of African American and Filipino American communities that have significantly shaped the nation’s arts. The arcade bar serves food and drinks, including some vegetarian and vegan options and a few gluten free items, though the kitchen is not dedicated gluten free. Entry is step free and two bathrooms are labeled accessible, but reaching them can be difficult when arcade games and players narrow the path. Rada grew up in Walnut Creek and began pursuing plant science after taking classes at DVC. He later transferred to Humboldt State University, earning a B.S. in environmental science with a focus on ecological restoration, along with minors in botany, geospatial analysis, and watershed management. His professional work as a botanist has taken him across the western United States to conduct vegetation surveys that help evaluate restoration outcomes. His field studies include alpine plants and lichens in the Rocky Mountains, flora of the sagebrush steppe throughout the Great Basin, and plant communities in dynamic dune systems along the Northern California coast. Outside of work, he is often on the road in the western states backpacking, seeking out plants, caring for cultivated specimens, or spending time with his dog.
