Open auditions for Kidz Danz Kompany’s production of The Nutcracker welcome dancers from age 4 to adults, regardless of experience. No studio enrollment is required and nonmembers may participate. Rehearsals and performances take place at MP Dance in La Mesa. Each year the company offers a fresh interpretation of this holiday classic with inventive storytelling and choreography across multiple dance styles, giving performers opportunities to showcase their strengths while creating a lively experience for audiences. Auditions are used to determine casting and placement, and everyone who completes registration and auditions is guaranteed a role. The role of Clara is available to dancers ages 9 to 18, and those candidates also take part in the general audition for ensemble and featured parts. Dancers should wear fitted dance attire with hair secured and bring appropriate shoes such as ballet, jazz, or pointe if available. No advance choreography or prepared material is required. Auditions are closed to observers, so parents and friends wait outside unless they are auditioning. Casting will be announced after auditions, and a detailed rehearsal schedule will follow. Not all dancers will be called to every rehearsal. All participants should complete the required registration form and list any scheduling conflicts on the audition form. Unreported conflicts may not be approved and could affect participation, and conflicts are not permitted during technical and dress rehearsals or on performance dates.

    Tibetan Buddhism & Meditation

4144 Campus Ave, San Diego · verified Aug 30
    See details

Rooted in Vajrayana, the Tibetan tradition that shares Mahayana’s aim of liberation for all beings while emphasizing swift realization through potent methods, this class introduces meditation practices from several lineages. Sessions alternate between Shamatha and Tonglen. Shamatha, often rendered as calm abiding or tranquility, nurtures a peaceful, contented mind that is clear and steady, like the still surface of a lake. The practice involves resting attention on a chosen object or field of awareness and gently training it to remain there, drawing on approaches from Lam Rim, Mahamudra, Bon, and Dzogchen to keep the work flexible and well suited to different minds and situations. Tonglen, a Tibetan term for giving and receiving, is a compassion practice of breathing in the suffering of others and breathing out love, joy, and care. This intentional exchange deepens a felt sense of interconnection and encourages meeting pain with openness rather than avoidance. The class is offered live, with recordings available on the Dharma Bum Temple YouTube channel.

A Burn On The Bay: The Playa Paddle

Ski Beach Park, San Diego · verified Aug 30
    See details

Burner creativity meets the calm waters of Mission Bay with a twilight group paddle that starts and ends at Ski Beach Park. Paddlers head to a sheltered cove where a DJ performs from an illuminated pontoon boat surrounded by paddleboards, kayaks, lights, and open water. Back on shore, the celebration continues with additional DJ sets, fire spinning, glowing art, burner-inspired style, and a ceremonial burn of the event’s own man. The focus is community, music, movement, and connection. All experience levels are welcome. The paddle is relaxed and social rather than competitive, and participants should feel comfortable on the water after dark or stay near experienced paddlers. For safety, everyone is asked to remain with the group, follow lead and sweep paddlers, stay visible, keep a safe distance from the pontoon boat, and be mindful of other vessels. Fire performances and the burn take place on land and may be adjusted for weather, safety, or site conditions. Attendees are encouraged to embrace paddle-safe burner, futuristic, neon, metallic, desert-punk, or other radically creative looks. Battery-powered lights, LEDs, glow accents, and illuminated art are welcome, with all decorations secured and no loose fabrics or sharp items that could tangle. No open flames or personal fire props are allowed on the water. Recommended items include a paddleboard, kayak, or similar craft with paddle and leash, a personal flotation device and whistle, visible nighttime lighting such as a white light or headlamp, battery-powered lights for boards or gear, water and snacks, a warm layer for after sunset, and a dry bag or waterproof phone case. No glass, and please pack out everything to leave Ski Beach cleaner than it was found. Board rentals may be available through Katie Rose and SUP Coronado at 619-888-7686, with limited availability. New paddlers are welcome and can receive extra guidance from Paddle Boarding SD. The exact launch point and final updates will be posted in the event discussion.

Teen drivers spend a full day at North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre for a Tire Rack Street Survival school focused on practical car control and sound decision making. The program blends about two hours of classroom instruction across three sessions with extensive time driving their own car alongside a coach. On course, participants practice recovering from skids on a wet surface, executing quick lane changes to avoid hazards, applying threshold braking and using ABS effectively, and running a slalom to feel how weight transfer affects handling. When conditions allow, the day can also include a two wheels off recovery and a safe following distance exercise. Classroom topics cover proper seating and hand placement, mirror setup, the tire contact patch, the principles of weight transfer, long-range vision, and situational awareness, along with the challenges posed by distractions such as radios, phones, or too many passengers. A semi truck blind spot demonstration may be staged so students and adults can experience how many nearby cars are hidden from the driver’s view, and an airbag deployment may be shown to reinforce correct hand position. Parents are welcome to stay all day, attend the classroom sessions, and speak with instructors about the activities. Lunch is provided for students, parents, and volunteers, and the midday break includes additional educational demonstrations. Tuition is $175.
