A weekly in-person group gives teens a welcoming place to slow down, connect, and build lasting emotional skills over the summer. Designed for ages 13 to 17, each session stands on its own, so participants can drop in any week without a long commitment. Every meeting focuses on a fresh theme like understanding emotions, navigating friendships, managing stress, and recognizing personal strengths. Activities lean on art, movement, music, games, and open conversation rather than lectures or graded worksheets, creating a supportive environment where teens can be themselves. The teen curriculum also explores identity, self-awareness, clear communication, boundary setting, and creating a personal toolkit for tough moments. Group work helps participants feel less alone, listen to peers, and practice social and emotional skills in real time. This one day tournament at McHenry Bowl is open to current California USBC members who average 180 or higher and hold active USBC membership. Membership cards will not be available for purchase at the venue. All details are based on a minimum of 75 entries, and first place features a guaranteed $3,000 payout. Qualifying uses an open format with six games of singles, and bowlers move to a new pair after each game. The highest scratch series sets the field for the top 12. Finals begin immediately after qualifying and are bowled scratch in two game, single elimination matches until a champion is determined. Youth bowlers with 180 or better averages who compete in a California USBC league may participate, provided a USBC Scholarship waiver is submitted before competition. The top 12 places receive prize or scholarship awards, and seniors who finish outside the main cash are paid at a 1 in 5 ratio. Entry fees range from $125 to $150 depending on when the entry is submitted. All participants must present valid identification at check in and follow the dress code, which requires a bowling jersey with the bowler’s name on the back. Slacks, shorts, or skorts are acceptable, and the tournament chairman has the final say on attire concerns. The champion also earns a complimentary jersey from Strike 12 Creations. Youth competitors with a 170 or higher average who bowl in a California USBC league may take part if they submit the required USBC scholarship waiver before competing. Qualifying consists of six singles scratch games, with bowlers changing pairs after each game. The top five advance to a stepladder final that follows qualifying to determine the champion. First place pays $1,500, contingent on at least 60 entries. The top five positions are guaranteed prize spots, additional payouts follow a 1:8 ratio, and seniors who finish outside the regular cash positions receive prize money at a 1:5 ratio. The champion also earns a free jersey. The entry fee is $100. All participants must show valid identification for check-in and for any bracket payouts. The program looks at why these brilliantly colored birds are so distinctive, how their unique method of filter feeding sets them apart, and what flamingos can reveal about the forces that shape beak form, push species toward greater specialization, and influence extinction risk, all in the context of changing Earth history. Despite their fame, the group’s past is riddled with puzzles, from murky origins and elusive fossils to multiple close calls with disappearance. Torres will share the latest understanding and field stories that illuminate these mysteries, including how grebes came to be recognized as flamingos’ closest living relatives only in recent times, why the lineage that preceded both remains unclear even with an almost complete fossil from that crucial interval, and how ancient flamingos with straight bills once spread across much of the world before vanishing from the record. He will also trace how the ancestors of today’s curved-billed species nearly suffered the same fate, then rebounded and dispersed widely again. The talk highlights evidence that California and the broader West Coast supported flamingo populations as recently as tens of thousands of years ago, and it follows the remarkable transformation young flamingos undergo after hatching as their beaks change shape, offering clues to the earliest phases of flamingo life.

The sixth annual golf tournament in support of the Lodi Animal Services Foundation takes place at Elkhorn Golf & Country Club and features a full day on the course with breakfast and a barbecue lunch included. Teams will play a four-player scramble and can also take part in a raffle and silent auction. On-course challenges include longest drive, closest to the pin, a putting contest, and a hole-in-one opportunity with prizes. Entry is $150 per golfer, and proceeds support lifesaving programs, enrichment, and care for animals in the community.

True crime takes the stage as Modesto Confidential returns for a single-afternoon program where real investigators share the cases they personally worked. The experience unfolds like a live documentary, tracing key evidence, false leads, and the breakthroughs that delivered justice. Two homicide investigations anchor the event. The first recounts the murder of Diasia Seese, discovered in a hotel bathroom after flooding alerted staff, a case that pushed the search beyond Modesto to the levees of the Stockton Delta. The second examines the Garrison Park attack on 63-year-old Jace Decker, who died after battling severe injuries, and the meticulous work that followed using city surveillance footage, social media records, and persistent detective work to piece together the truth. Before the presentations, ticketholders can enjoy complimentary specialty drinks and appetizers from local vendors, and raffle drawings will be part of the program. This is a 21 and over event. Presented by the Modesto Police Investigators Association, a nonprofit that supports victims and families impacted by violent crime, contributes funding to cold case homicide investigations, and provides advanced training for detectives.
