A free outdoor concert brings the sounds of Latin soul to Yerba Buena Gardens as Joe Bataan returns for a third appearance in four years. An early standout on Fania Records, he forged a signature blend of doo-wop vocals and boogaloo and is celebrated for classics like “Gypsy Woman” and “Ordinary Guy.” His career ranges from 1970s releases on Ghetto Records and the coining of “salsoul” to later explorations in disco and hip-hop, including the 1979 single “Rap-O Clap-O.” After stepping away in the early 1980s to work with youth in detention facilities, he recounted his journey in the 2024 memoir Streetology: The Legacy of the Afro-Filipino, King of Latin Soul, and has been back onstage since 2005. The program opens with MeloDious, a rising Oakland trio featuring keyboardist Micaiah, bassist Matthias and drummer Memphis Dempsey. Their sound draws from gospel, jazz, R&B and soul, with rich harmonies, inventive arrangements and strong creative chemistry. Formed in 2016, they have shared stages with several Grammy Award-winning artists, and their previous Gardens appearance supported Cava Menzies’ CO-LLAB choir. Organized by Diaspora Arts Connection, the 10th anniversary edition of Let Her Sing® brings women vocalists to YBCA’s Blue Shield of California Theater in San Francisco for a concert centered on artistic freedom and the right to perform. Mina Deris, Eilbret Dooman, Marjan Farsad, Mehrnam Rastegari, Roxana Sarrafi, and Gelareh Sheibani share music rooted in Persian, Arab-Iranian, Assyrian, classical, folk, contemporary, and diasporic traditions. Through original pieces, time-honored repertoire, solo spotlights, and collaborative arrangements, the program lifts stories of heritage, migration, identity, resistance, and belonging. Iranian-Canadian soprano and songwriter Golrokh Aminian serves as host. The performers are supported by the event’s house ensemble led by Music Director Yahya Alkhansa, with Navid Ghaem Maghami returning as Art Director. Shankar leads with vocals, uke, and sound artistry, joined by saxophonist Prasant Radhakrishnan, bassist Peter Barshay, percussionist and drummer Zach Mondlick, and Varun Pattabhiraman on mridangam and kanjira. Shankar, originally from India, is an international vocalist, sound artist, composer, and producer, a Recording Academy member with credits on a GRAMMY-nominated album. Her work moves between Carnatic music, jazz, global traditions, and contemporary sound, with a focus on emotion, consciousness, and human connection. For this project she collaborates with Radhakrishnan, a Carnatic jazz saxophonist mentored by Dr. Kadri Gopalnath, and Barshay, a seasoned jazz bassist and composer with extensive touring experience. The ensemble shapes an immersive musical language where tradition, improvisation, poetry, and lived feeling intersect. French-Malagasy pianist and composer Mathis Picard delivers a contemporary jazz performance that fuses the music’s tradition with conservatory-level technique, stride piano textures, global rhythmic influences, and a fresh modern pulse. A Juilliard graduate who studied with Kenny Barron, he earned second prize at the 2014 Montreux Jazz Festival Piano Competition and received recognition from ASCAP’s Next Generation of Songwriters. His international career spans work as a pianist, composer, producer, and bandleader across the United States, Europe, and Asia, and he has performed with Ron Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Cyrille Aimée, Braxton Cook, and Etienne Charles.

Marisa Anderson appears alongside Camellia Boutros, highlighting adventurous guitar work and thoughtful exploration. Anderson is a distinctive guitarist and prolific collaborator who crosses musical borders, examining how expression, form, and tradition meet, then reshaping familiar ideas into something entirely her own. She also created The Anthology of UnAmerican Folk Music, drawn from nearly a thousand recordings from the late Harry Smith’s private collection. After a chance encounter opened the door for study and discovery, she focused this project on music from places that have been in conflict with the United States since 1970, including Southeast Asia, the USSR, and Arabic and Islamic parts of the world. In its first volume she offers nine personal interpretations, composed, transcribed, and arranged through research, deep listening, and trial and error, mapping a path from Afghanistan to Vietnam by way of Yemen, Cambodia, and Turkmenistan.

After a period of personal and wider turmoil, the Philadelphia based musician, songwriter, and producer has stepped forward under his own name. His latest project, I’m Your Vampire, is his most personal work yet. Across ten songs it leans into rough hewn, flannel shaded rock and roll and charts a path from solitary reflection through darkness toward a pinprick of light. Tickets range from $24 to $26. A Half Moon Bay staple for more than forty years, the Pumpkin Run features a scenic route on the Coastal Trail with stretches right beside the Pacific. Sweat Your Prayers offers a 5Rhythms movement space to breathe, move, and sweat while reconnecting through the body and with community. Rooted in San Francisco, this longstanding practice welcomes all bodies and every experience level. Guided by music and the five rhythms of Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness, it is a moving meditation with very little talking. There are no steps to memorize and no set choreography, so you are free to find your own way of dancing. This is a barefoot practice. Bring a water bottle, wear comfortable clothes, bring your curiosity, and invite a friend if you wish. Plan to arrive a little early to settle in. Rock The Dock brings a Día de Los Muertos celebration to Seaport in Redwood City with a free outdoor performance by Momotombo-SF, a 10-piece Bay Area Latin rock ensemble made up largely of original and former members of Malo and Santana. Travel back to the 1960s through a vibrant display of psychedelic posters from legendary venues in San Francisco’s South Bay. Authors Brian Conroy and Bill Guardino will talk about their book, South Bay Flashback, exploring the groundbreaking visual style and the rebellious, creative spirit that fueled the Bay Area rock and roll scene. Guardino attended his first rock concert at 14 and has spent more than 55 years building an expansive rock memorabilia collection that spans vinyl in multiple formats, posters, handbills, autographed photos, instruments, concert shirts, comics, magazines, and collectible toys. He continues to see as many shows as possible, especially Dead and Company, and this book is his first. Conroy is the author of eight books, including Shooting Stars and Blazing Guitars and I’m Just Sayin'. He taught theater and public speaking for 35 years in San Jose public schools and also taught storytelling at San José State University, and he wrote and directed the rock-themed musicals Hip Van Winkle, Revenge of the Flower Children, and Rock and Roll Must Die.
