Sugar and Spice: Chocolate-Making in the 18th Century

Connecticut Fireants Annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser

At Laurel View Country Club, the Connecticut Fireants host their annual golf tournament fundraiser to benefit their 501c3 mission, which provides youth hockey players and athletes with added opportunities to develop and compete in the sport. The day includes 18 holes of golf in a scramble format for all skill levels, plus breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks. Participants can expect giveaways, on course tastings, raffles that include a high end raffle and a Chinese raffle, and contests for longest drive, closest to the pin, and best dressed foursome. Early registration is 175 dollars per golfer for those who played in last year’s outing, and general registration is 200 dollars per golfer once general registration opens. Spots are limited and there was a waiting list last year, so foursomes are only confirmed once registration and payment are complete. Summer Craft Camp opens the studio to colorful, hands-on creativity where kids can explore, experiment, and happily get a little messy. Designed for ages 5 and up, each project is adjusted to fit every participant’s age and skill level. One session spotlights 3D pet sculptures, and other creations on the schedule range from 3D tower sculptures made with forms, paint, and gems to Under the Sea themed 3D sea creature art with glow-in-the-dark paintings, along with clay figures, sculptures, wind chimes, mosaics, sand art, and more. Every session includes one main DIY project and a smaller bonus craft, with plenty of time to create and feel proud of the results. Participants can register for a single day or multiple sessions, and the cost is $38 per person. Advance reservation and pre-purchase are required because space is limited. The 4th Annual Community Economic Development Summit

Moving forward together, this returning gathering pairs the 4th Annual Community Economic Development Summit with the 5th Annual Black Wall Street Fest, Connecticut’s largest Black-owned festival. The festival uplifts legacy while the summit focuses on building the infrastructure that sustains it. It is shaped as a space for memory, truth, strategy, relationships, and responsibility. Across one evening, attendees honor what has been built, confront what has been taken, and work toward what can be passed on. The program follows four movements. Memory centers the rise of New Haven and the traditions of enterprise, land, culture, faith, and self determination, offered as guidance rather than nostalgia. Truth traces a parallel history that links places like Tulsa and New Haven to show how thriving Black economic ecosystems were disrupted and how those patterns persist. Restoration treats renewal as a civic duty, with leaders advancing work in justice, food, housing, reentry, public safety, and civic power to show liberation in practice. Ascension deepens the conversation on leadership, trust, and responsibility, highlighting the lived journeys behind public achievement with Black women leading across New Haven’s institutions. The night concludes with a collective promise to carry one connection, one action, and one contribution beyond the room. Free and open to all, and intentionally intergenerational with a family friendly welcome. North Haven sets the stage for an authentic blues showcase with Rocky Lawrence, an artist deeply rooted in the lineage that leads back to Robert Johnson. His performance bridges the raw acoustic slide tradition and the electric drive that inspired players like Jimi Hendrix, bringing the stories of the blues to life. Recognized for a sharp stage presence with a Dobbs hat, two-tone shoes, and a road-worn Gibson Robert Johnson model, he plays with conviction and the assurance of a veteran blues artist. His musical path began at nine on trumpet in a Connecticut home filled with the sounds of Louis Armstrong and Mahalia Jackson, with Armstrong as an early hero. By eleven he had turned to guitar under Hendrix’s influence, soon tracing the changes of Voodoo Child to Muddy Waters, then further to Robert Johnson and Son House. He often notes that Johnson drew from contemporaries including Son House and Lonnie Johnson, a lineage that continues to shape his sound. Beginner Calligraphy - Fall 2026

Beginner-friendly instruction introduces the classic italic chancery style of calligraphy. Through step-by-step guidance, participants examine the anatomy of each letter and practice combining forms into graceful words. Topics include spacing within and between lines, creating contrast with thick and thin strokes using the pen, and choosing appropriate tools and papers. Everyone will produce a small finished work, such as a quote or short poem, and regular practice at home is expected. The class is led by Theresa DiNicola, an artist with a fine arts degree from Palm Beach State College in West Palm Beach, Florida. Her background includes more than 20 years operating an advertising agency and lettering thousands of envelopes, certificates, signs, and other projects. Cost is $110 for members and $120 for non-members. A $25 materials fee is paid to the instructor at the first class.

Shannon McMahon brings a night of contemporary folk shaped by storytelling, warm vocals, and years of stage experience to Klekolo Sessions. The Stratford, Connecticut singer-songwriter began crafting songs after receiving her first guitar at nine and was performing in public by twelve. Her sound blends modern folk with touches of country, guided by a resonant voice reminiscent of Joan Baez and Natalie Merchant. In addition to appearances throughout Connecticut, she has shared her music with international audiences in Second Life since 2008, building a bridge between virtual and in-person music communities. Highlights include being named a finalist at the 2015 Connecticut Folk Festival and serving as an alternate in the Connecticut Folk songwriting contest. 36th Annual Alumni Golf Tournament

Now in its 36th year, this alumni golf tournament takes place at Hunter Memorial Golf Club and brings together golfers and supporters to help fund the Boys & Girls Club of Meriden. Proceeds sustain programs that reach more than 1,200 children and teens across Central Connecticut. The Club provides after-school enrichment, a year-round preschool, sports and recreation leagues, and two summer camps. No child is turned away for financial reasons, and more than 80 percent of members receive fee assistance. Participation is associated with stronger academics, improved social and emotional well-being, and reduced risky behaviors. Among Club teens, 97 percent expect to graduate from high school, and 76 percent of low-income members ages 12 to 18 who attend regularly report mostly As and Bs, compared with 67 percent of their peers nationwide. Event day begins with check-in and a hot breakfast, followed by a pre-round briefing and cart loading, then a shotgun start for the round. After play, the gathering continues at Taino Smokehouse Prime with a relaxed happy hour as golfers finish, then a reception lunch featuring food and drinks, raffles, auctions, and opportunities to connect.

Move Shoot Treat - Win the Fight

Move Shoot Treat is a comprehensive course focused on staying effective if you are injured and still need to run your firearm. It is designed for those who carry a firearm for self-defense. The day is organized into three parts. It begins with training on controlling severe bleeding, explaining essential equipment and how to use it. Topics include choosing and applying tourniquets, packing wounds, using direct pressure, selecting and applying chest seals, and recognizing signs of shock from blood loss. The second block concentrates on firearm skills such as one-handed shooting, drawing and reholstering with a single hand, reloading with one hand, clearing malfunctions one-handed, and engaging targets while moving. The final segment brings it all together with 20 individual and multi-person drills that apply the medical and shooting techniques learned earlier. Medical supplies needed for hands-on practice are provided for use during the training session.

The southern singer, songwriter, and psychedelic serviceman is highlighted through Anthology Recordings’ archival series, including Sunshine Only Sometimes: Archives Vol. 2, 1972 to 1975, drawn from recordings made around Georgia in bedrooms, a barn, and a motel room with a reel to reel and a rotating cast of skilled players. Raised in Adel, Georgia, he moved from early inspiration sparked by The Beatles to inventive overdubs on a Sears two track recorder, mobile sessions with collaborator Hans VanBrackle, and songs that informed Ode to a Rainy Day, Sunshine Only Sometimes, and Music and Dreams. His music blends mellow folk, country tinges, and rural hues with memorable melodies and reflective writing, touching at times on smooth West Coast textures and Laurel Canyon style songwriting. The result is a strain of American folk rock with a lasting resonance.
