There is no required uniform, though silkies, patriotic attire, boots, and rucks are encouraged, and many participants carry weight in their packs. The purpose of this Silkies Ruck is to bring together Veterans, Active Duty, Reservists, National Guard, law enforcement officers, and Fire Rescue personnel to build bonds and a support network that helps prevent suicide and strengthens mental health. Humor and camaraderie are part of the experience, with many wearing combat boots, silkies, and other playful touches to help break the ice and foster connection. Plan ahead with a few essentials. Bring a valid ID for bar service, carry personal water even though support vehicles will have plenty, and use cash at stops to speed service and tipping. Pack snacks for energy, sunscreen and headgear, and consider silkies, boots, and a ruck if desired. Patriotic, unit, or branch flags are welcome, but political or religious flags are not. Face coverings and eye protection like sunglasses or goggles can help with the elements. Foot care supplies such as Vaseline, bandages, and moleskin, plus extra socks, are recommended, along with over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol or Motrin. A few guidelines keep the day running smoothly. Stay on sidewalks when available and do not block traffic. Public drinking is not allowed and there are no open containers on the hike; enjoy beverages only at the scheduled stops and during the after party. Do not bring outside alcohol into sponsor establishments. Alcohol may be brought poolside at the Tiki Bar for the after party. Anyone who becomes extremely intoxicated will be removed to a safety vehicle. Illegal drugs are not permitted, prescriptions must remain with the person they are prescribed to, and cannabis use is not allowed in public during the ruck. Be respectful of all venues, other patrons, and the city. Participation on the hike itself is limited to Veterans, Active Duty, Reservists, National Guard, LEO, and Fire Rescue. Civilians are asked not to follow the formation and can meet the group at stops. No strollers or children are allowed on the hike. Due to heat concerns, service dogs are encouraged to stay home and no other pets are permitted. Leave weapons and accessories at home; those licensed to carry concealed must keep firearms secured and out of sight. Avoid political arguments that could cause disruptions. Everyone, including volunteers and drivers, must wear the F4W wristband issued at registration. Participants often check in on Facebook as the group progresses, lend a hand to fellow battle buddies, and lean into the red, white, and blue spirit with moto shirts and branch pride.
