The Dark Side - Comics & GamesUrban Sketch: Historic Mira Mar Plaza
An urban sketch outing highlights the historic Mira Mar Plaza, the largest remaining boom era commercial complex in Sarasota. Built at remarkable speed in 1922 during the early wave of Florida tourism, it began as the city’s largest apartment building, with a hotel and an auditorium added soon after. The plaza helped shape a walkable downtown and continues to ground the area’s sense of place. Ongoing growth and rezoning have put the site at risk of demolition, and substantial restoration is needed, so community attention remains important. The gathering starts with a short meet and greet at Waffle Monkey, after which participants head out to capture favorite views of the plaza and surrounding streets. Everyone reconvenes at the same spot to lay out and share their sketches, and those interested can stay for lunch and conversation. Parking is available in nearby ramps and on the street, including options around the corner on Mira Mar Court and two blocks north on Palm at the Palm Ramp.

The program features a talk about Arthur, who will be present, along with an appearance by her daughter, Robin Draper. Registration is free and requested but not required. A historic member of the Sarasota Art Colony, Arthur is a Sarasota artist celebrating her 100th birthday this year. Over six decades she built a career as a contemporary artist with 30 gallery showings and numerous honors. She arrived in Sarasota in the 1950s with a fine arts degree from the University of Pittsburgh and received a student scholarship from Hilton Leech, a prominent painter and teacher associated with the Ringling School of Art. As a staff artist with the Ringling Barnum Bailey Circus, she created props and dramatic displays, often describing the circus as a constant source of imagination and a place where she formed lasting creative friendships. Her close friendship with Syd Solomon supported her trajectory, and through the New College Arts Institute she studied with visiting contemporaries including Phillip Guston, James Brooks, Larry Rivers, and Conrad Marca-Relli, many of whom became friends and familiar guests in her Siesta Key home. In an era when many women navigated expectations at home while pursuing professional art careers, Arthur committed to abstract, experimental work. She consistently refined her skills, prepared and framed her own canvases, transported her art to shows, and often signed with only her last name to be recognized on equal footing with male peers. Arthur taught hundreds of students and educators, led workshops, and created The Rainbow, a children’s art program on local television. She concluded her career in 2010 and was represented by State of the Arts Gallery in downtown Sarasota for more than a decade. This gathering celebrates her enduring influence and the addition of two of her paintings to the Arts Advocates historical collection.
