Plastic Canvas Needlepoint Letters

Learn the basics of plastic canvas needlepoint in a beginner friendly class focused on creating decorative letters. No prior experience is needed, since this method uses a plastic mesh and is typically easier on the hands and eyes than stitching on fabric. You will practice simple techniques on straight and curved shapes, then move on to crafting a letter that can become an ornament, gift tag, applique, or part of a banner. Instruction covers cutting the canvas and working the tent stitch, also known as the continental stitch. The cost is $15 and supplies are included, with a written pattern and single chart for the letter selected at checkout, acrylic yarn, 7 mesh plastic canvas, and a tapestry needle. A small selection of metal and plastic needles will be available as needed. Teens are welcome. Parents may stay, keeping in mind that space is limited, or explore the antique mall during the class. Reservations are required before the session begins and any class without registered participants may be canceled. A separate class is available for younger children.

Sea Turtle Walks

Experience a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service guided sea turtle walk focused on the nesting world of loggerhead turtles. The outing starts with an educational session covering conservation, nesting behavior, and coastal habitats. Participants then caravan in their own vehicles to Playalinda Beach while scouts search for a nesting turtle. If conditions allow and a loggerhead is located, the group will be invited onto the beach for a careful, respectful viewing after the turtle has begun laying eggs. This program highlights Florida’s nesting habitat and the efforts that protect it. Advance tickets are required.

Wickham Park Brevard County Farmers Market

Set inside the Regional Pavilion at Wickham Park in Melbourne, this Brevard County farmers market spotlights edible, locally produced foods and agricultural goods rather than crafts or art. It runs year-round, pausing only on holidays or during hurricanes. Parking and admission are free. Many vendors accept card payments, though bringing some cash is helpful for those that do not. SNAP is accepted, and EBT can be processed at the SNAP/FAB booth to receive market tokens. Every dollar used with SNAP is matched dollar for dollar with Fresh Access Bucks, with no cap on the match. For example, a $25 EBT transaction provides $25 in SNAP tokens plus $25 in FAB tokens, giving $50 to spend on fresh, local food. Tokens do not expire, so they can be used over time. The pavilion offers accessible parking, restrooms, and water fountains, and bus stops are located at the main entrances to the park.

Space Coast 5th Saturday August Double Dance

This event marks the Space Coast's first double dance with a format designed to give dancers plenty of time on the floor. Two full sessions are separated by a two-hour dinner break, followed by an after-party hosted by the Rountrees. The venue is near Cocoa Village, which offers many restaurants, and there is a refrigerator on site. A nearby riverside park makes it easy to bring your own meal. Both dances take place at the new location, Rockledge Municipal Building, which features a view of the Indian River and a wood floor. The Four O'Clocks from Atlanta provide the music, an up-and-coming traditional old-time string band with Max Godfrey, Maggie Hall, Jenna Mobley, and Jeremy Aggers. Calling is by JJ Luxe of Orlando, who frequently travels and recently called at the Bug Stomp in South Carolina. A short lesson for newcomers starts each dance. Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for youth and young adults ages 25 and under for a single dance, or $25 for adults and $10 for youth and young adults for both dances. Bring a water bottle and a snack to share. Water is provided. No experience or partner is required. Everyone is welcome.
