New Orleans celebrates its creative spirit with the First Saturday Art Walk on Magazine Street, a long-standing tradition presented by the Magazine Street Merchants Association and The Scout Guide New Orleans. Fifteen galleries along this storied corridor keep their doors open late so guests can explore fresh exhibitions, hear live music, and take advantage of exclusive promotions. The focus is on local art, culture, and community, creating a free evening that suits dedicated collectors as well as casual admirers.

The 4th annual Mermaid Parade brings ocean themed pageantry to the Mississippi River, traveling from the Esplanade Plaza riverfront promenade to Audubon Aquarium. Costumes inspired by mermaids, mermen, sea creatures, pirates and sailors set the scene, and a featured puppet performance from The New Orleans Giant Puppet Fest titled Mermaid of the Magdalenes adds a theatrical highlight. Spectating is free. Participation in the parade is $35 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Proceeds support the Audubon Institute’s Education Department. Temple Support offers an ongoing way to volunteer by tending to the care of the temple so it remains calm, dignified, and welcoming. Helpers take on everyday tasks such as dusting and wiping surfaces, sweeping and mopping floors, nurturing houseplants, arranging flowers or offerings, tidying the altar and other sacred areas, organizing the Freedom Library, restocking necessities, handling trash and recycling, maintaining entryways and outdoor spaces, greeting and directing visitors, setting up and breaking down for ceremonies, running small supply errands, and assisting with basic administrative needs. No specific skills are needed, only a willing heart to help. Volunteers should dress modestly in covered attire out of respect for the space. All tools and cleaning materials are provided, so participants need only bring their presence and willingness to serve. Consistent care from many hands keeps the temple a place where people can gather, heal, and grow, eases the weight on a small group, keeps the Freedom Library accessible, ensures a warm welcome for all who enter, and allows leadership to focus on programming, guidance, and community care.
